Martinsville Speedway
Practice – Report

Duration: 50 minutes

Chase Elliott is the first car on the race track in the opening round of practice.

2 minutes in, car in the wall! William Byron has suffered a flat tire on his opening lap. He tagged the wall and dinged up the right front fender as the car wouldn’t turn off turn two.

15 minutes in, Hendrick Motorsports is still trying to figure out what caused the flat tire. The rubber had a cut in it. The team has changed brake rotor and other components. They’re unsure if they’ll make it back out.

20 minutes in, another car is in the wall. Corey LaJoie was 22 laps into a run and he run, he ran out of brakes. He slammed the wall and the red flag is out.

“There’s no coffee that will wake you up like losing brakes into turn one at Martinsville. We didn’t really bring a backup that’s fully ready to go. Hopefully, they can work on the backup car and make it just as good,” LaJoie told Fox Sports.

Halfway in practice: 1. Aric Almirola (19.527); 2. Kyle Busch (19.545); 3. Brad Keselowski (19.576); 4. Clint Bowyer (19.578); 5. Martin Truex Jr (19.603); 6. Joey Logano (19.620); 7. Denny Hamlin (19.634); 8. Chase Elliott (19.634); 9. Kevin Harvick (19.640); 10. Ryan Blaney (19.641);

Last year, Martin Truex Jr was quickest in the opening round of practice with a 19.776. The new rules package was expected to set track records at all the short tracks this year. Joey Logano set the track qualifying record at 18.898 seconds in 2014.

10 minutes remain, Stewart-Haas Racing has hit the track with qualifying setups. Clint Bowyer, Daniel Suarez and Aric Almirola sit at the top of the board. It’s a 19.387 for Bowyer. Harvick did not make a qualifying run just yet.

Clint Bowyer wins the first practice session at Martinsville Speedway for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.
