This is the 50th anniversary year for the California road course. In celebration, the carousel is open. For the first time since 1998, NASCAR stock cars will run a new layout at the track.
No driver in the field has run this section of the race track in a stock car. Jimmie Johnson is the only driver that has time on the layout but he did it in a Formula car 20 years ago.
Additionally, the manufacture simulators aren’t accurate for the new layout. As a result, most drivers are coming into this blind with very little work in the simulators. It’s a unique situation.
There’s only two rounds of practice on the track this weekend. Both of which sit ahead of Saturday qualifying.

Practice Report
Duration: 80 minutes
Lawnmowers are out early. Bubba Wallace has spun coming into the carousel on his warm up lap, no damage.
William Byron has gone off the track. However, he’s still the fastest so far.
Joey Logano is the first driver to make a pass exiting the carousel. He hugged the inside line and powered to the inside off the corner, completing the pass into turn 7. Logano jumps to the top of the board.
Halfway in Sonoma Raceway Practice: 1. Joey Logano (97.166); 2. Kyle Larson (97.380); 3. Jimmie Johnson (97.643); 4. William Byron (97.685); 5. David Ragan (97.924); 6. Aric Almirola (97.931); 7. Paul Menard (97.998); 8. Kyle Busch (98.026); 9. Ryan Blaney (98.040); 10. Alex Bowman (98.186);
“As soon as I turn to the right it steps out,” Martin Truex Jr says as he heads into the new section of the layout.
30 minutes remain in practice, Austin Dillon has clipped the inside tire barriers as he rolled through turn 11. He’s collected moderate damage from the numbers on the door to the left rear fender.
Sonoma is known to eat up tires. Kyle Larson is the best example of that in this session. He ran a single run of 17 laps and lost 3.5 seconds from the beginning to the end of the run.
In the closing seconds of practice, Martin Truex Jr and Ryan Blaney both jump to the top of the board. They push Buescher back to the 3rd.
Martin Truex Jr wins the opening round of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice!
