Kentucky Race Results: July 13, 2019 (NASCAR Cup Series)

NASCAR race results from Kentucky Speedway in the Quaker State 400

Today, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series unloads at Kentucky Speedway. It’s a race that will start under sunlight and end under moonlight in Sparta, KY.

Daniel Suarez and Aric Almirola line up on the front row. Stewart-Haas Racing has a lock on the front row as they head to the starting line in the Quaker State 400.

The last win for Suarez came in a go-kart back in Mexico, he’ll look to change that today.

Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 80

Green flag, Suarez gets the jump and leads into turn one. Almirola holds onto 2nd.

Early on the field runs under the PJ1. It takes awhile for that to become activated. Until then, it’s slick and drivers are trying to avoid it.

Lap 21, Almirola has caught the bumper of Suarez. He catches dirty air, loses the nose and loses ground. Suarez has moved to the traction compound in turns 3 and 4.

Pit stops

Lap 40, Clint Bowyer heads to the pit lane to begin the pit cycle. Laps later, Ryan Blaney pits as well.

Lap 47, Chase Elliott is slow with a flat right front. The caution is out!

The rest of the field heads to the pit lane. Suarez falls outside the top 10 to 14th with a four tire call. Keselowski leads them off the pit lane with fuel only.

Green, Keselowski and Kurt Busch run side by side into turn one. They remain even off turn two. Busch takes the lead on the outside in turn three.

Lap 55, Corey LaJoie is around behind them and the caution is back out.

Green, Kurt Busch and Kyle Busch run even into turn one. They run four wide behind them! Hamlin moves to 4th on the outside lane. Kurt Busch holds the lead at the front.

Lap 63, Corey LaJoie and Bayley Currey tangle into turn one and bring out another caution. Ryan Blaney will get his lap back.

Green, Kurt Busch and Logano run even into turn one. Kurt Busch holds the spot on the top lane off turn two. Logano has a run off turn four, he side drafts back into turn one and noses ahead. Busch fights back with a side draft and retakes the lead on the outside!

Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 80

The field returns to the pit lane. Kyle Busch wins the race off the pit lane with two tires. Kurt Busch is off 9th with four. Several cars stay out.

Green flag, Stenhouse gets the jump at the line and he’s clear before turn one. Kyle Busch is slicing through the field.

Lap 91, Clint Bowyer has pulled to the rear bumper of Stenhouse. Lap 100, Kyle Busch has moved to 3rd and he’s running down the leaders. With two new tires, he drives right by Bowyer and then Stenhouse. Kyle Busch takes the lead.

Pit cycle

Lap 109, Daniel Suarez heads to the pit lane for a four tire call to begin the pit cycle.

Lap 150, Kyle Busch finally pits from the lead. He was leading Byron by 18 seconds before the stop. Kyle Busch cycles back to the race lead. Erik Jones runs 2nd, two seconds back.

Kyle Busch holds on to take the win in stage two!

Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 107

The field returns to the pit lane. It’s a fuel only call for Kyle Busch and he’s out first. Logano is off 7th, the first car with four tires. Four cars stay out.

Green, Clint Bowyer and Kurt Busch run even into turn one. Clint Bowyer wins that battle as William Byron follows him through to 2nd.

Lap 174, William Byron has closed to the rear bumper of Clint Bowyer. Bowyer weaves down the straights to break the draft.

Jimmie Johnson is around! Joey Logano was hanging on his left rear. No contact but Johnson’s rear end stepped out. He chased it up the hill and smacked the outside wall.

Byron launches early. Byron stomps the brakes at the last second to try and avoid a call. They run side by side into turn one. Byron is hanging with him on the bottom. Kurt Busch pulls even with Byron and pulls him back.

Penalty: William Byron has been handed a penalty for a restart violation.

75 to go, Kurt Busch is on the left rear of Bowyer. A heavy side draft, he pulls him back and they run even into the corner. Bowyer holds him off at the exit of the corner. Kyle Busch is closing on both of them.

66 to go, Kyle Busch has closed to the leaders. Kurt Busch has a run off turn four, he hangs onto his left rear into the corner. Again, Clint Bowyer holds him off on the outside lane.

64 to go, lap traffic ahead. Lap traffic sits ahead and Bowyer pushes up the track. Kurt Busch fills the inside lane. Busch is clear on the bottom as Bowyer lifts to let him go so he can drop to the bottom as he’s coming to pit road.

Pit cycle

61 to go, Clint Bowyer heads to the pit lane. 54 to go, Kurt Busch heads to the pit lane.

45 to go, Kyle Busch leads. Kurt Busch is running 19th. Everyone ahead of Kurt Busch has yet to pit.

Martin Truex Jr and William Byron nearly crash down the front stretch. Byron collects it and continues rolling.

41 to go, Kyle Busch hits the pit lane for right side tires only.

28 to go, seven cars have yet to pit. Newman leads.

21 to go

21 to go, Kyle Busch heads to the bottom. Logano heads to the top. Logano crosses under him off the corner. Kyle Busch pinches him heavy into turn one as Logano runs below the apron. As he comes off the apron, Logano doors Busch.

Logano fights back with a side draft down the back stretch. Busch tries to run away from him as he drives to the apron down the back stretch. Logano takes the lead!

The PJ1 has been worked off the speedway over the course of this long race. The racing surface and handling has changed for many cars in the field.

15 to go, Logano leads Kyle Busch by 2.3 seconds.

6 to go, Bubba Wallace is around with a flat tire! The caution is out.

It’s set to be a green-white-checkered finish. There could be more than one, likely. Kurt Busch restarts 4th, he took four tires on the last stop. The top three took just two.

Green, Logano gets the jump, Busch side drafts him hard. Kurt Busch looks three wide on the outside. Logano fades.

Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch and Erik Jones remain three wide. Kurt Busch and Kyle Busch sit side by side for the lead.

Final lap, they remain side by side. Kyle Busch gets into his left rear off turn four. Kurt Busch wiggles but he holds the lead coming to the line.
