Practice – Report
Duration: 50 minutes
The modifieds have already been on the race track. At the same time, it takes a few laps for the PJ1 to start working. As a result, many teams are sitting early in this season.
This is the only practice session ahead of qualifying. Teams will be making brief runs in this session as they have two practice sessions after qualifying.
Halfway in NHMS practice: 1. Kevin Harvick (27.869); 2. Chase Elliott (27.920); 3. Kyle Larson (27.949); 4. Kyle Busch (27.989); 5. Ryan Blaney (27.990); 6. Martin Truex Jr (28.003); 7. Brad Keselowski (28.004); 8. Alex Bowman (28.098); 9. William Byron (28.119); 10. Clint Bowyer (28.141);
Chase Elliott jump to the top of the board. He entered the corner in the PJ1. He then cut into the corner, driving away from the PJ1. In the middle of the corner he went back up in the PJ1 to use the traction compound on exit.
Teams are uncertain of which lap will be best for the tire combination.
3 minutes remain in practice, Denny Hamlin is in the wall! He lost it into turn three. Hamlin stomped on the gas to try and keep it out of the wall but he still backed it right into the fence, heavy damage.
The team is calling for a backup car as he drives it back to the garage. Hamlin had heavy left rear damage and the deck lid is also smashed.
The green is back out with a minute to go. Ryan Newman is in the wall in turn three! It’s a similar incident to Hamlin’s just a minute ago.
Chase Elliott wins the opening round of NASCAR practice!
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will return to the track for qualifying later this afternoon. That will take place after back to back Xfinity practice sessions.
