This race is the final race of the regular season. Next week, the NASCAR Playoffs begin and only 16 cars will be eligible after this race.

Bowyer, Suarez, Newman and Johnson are set to battle for the final two transfer spots. Suarez and Newman head into this race tied for the 16th and final position.

This is a unique schedule for the race weekend. The cars rolled through inspection and were impounded after final practice on Friday.

There’s no additional inspection ahead of the race. The cars will remain impounded after this NASCAR qualifying session.

Now, the field will roll to the track for qualifying on a Sunday. The green flag will drop on the race just a handful of laps after qualifying.

Indianapolis
Qualifying – Report

Laps: 1

NASCAR will send three cars on the track at the same time. Each car will exit the pit lane in 15 seconds of separation to avoid drafting.

Group A consists of the bottom 20 qualifiers from the previous week. Their order in the session were determined by a random draw.

Kyle Busch is quickest at the conclusion of the group A qualifiers. Most of the drivers picked up exactly a half second since their times in final practice yesterday.

Indianapolis Qualifying – After Group A: 1. Kyle Busch (48.707); 2. Aric Almirola (48.750); 3. Ricky Stenhouse Jr (48.799); 4. Bubba Wallace (48.905); 5. David Ragan (48.932); 6. Michael McDowell (49.044); 7. Ryan Newman (49.107); 8. Ty Dillon (49.217); 9. Martin Truex Jr (49.260); 10. Matt Tifft (49.415);

Group B

Kevin Harvick jumps to the top of the board! He was full throttle through turn one, just like Kyle Busch. Harvick was nearly a full second quicker than his time in final practice, 0.8 seconds quicker.

Denny Hamlin wrecked after final practice on Friday. The tire blew going into the corner on the cool down lap. As a result, the team has rolled out the backup for this session.

Hamlin’s car is the only one lined up on the pit lane without tape on the grill. As he makes his first laps in the backup, he’ll do it in race trim. Hamlin is turning this qualifying run into a bit of a practice run.

Paul Menard is the second to last car to roll. He’s bad fast down the straights but he loses ground in the corners. He’s lacking downforce.

Kevin Harvick will start from the pole position at IMS!

They’ll take to the 2.5-mile oval in about 3 hours for the race. NASCAR moved up the start time just a bit with a threat of rain.
