Indycar results from race two of the Detroit Grand Prix

It’s Sunday, the NTT Indycar Series is set for another race around Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan. It’s race number two of the double-race weekend in the Detroit Grand Prix.

Oliver Askew is running this race after just 10 minutes on practice. He’s driving the No. 7 after Felix Rosenqvist was injured in Saturday’s race.

Santino Ferrucci crashed in qualifying this morning. The team unloaded Sato’s backup up. It’s a speedway car but the team thrashes to put it together and he’s set for the green.

Marcus Ericsson won yesterday. However, he ran out of fuel in qualifying and will start this race from near last on the grid.

Newgarden is set to start this race on the harder black tire. Most of the field will start on the softer reds. The reds are fastest but they won’t last as long. Each team has to use both at some point.

Green, Newgarden gets the jump. VeeKay looks to the inside of Herta but can’t take the spot. Alexander Rossi takes Romain Grosjean and Scott Dixon three wide for 4th into turn one. All these bounce off each other. Dixon is sideways but he keeps it off the wall.

Sebastien Bourdais hits the curb and misses a shift. The field stacks up behind him. Max Chilton has lost a front wing. He slows but the wing is trapped under the car. Chilton stuff it into the tire barriers as he was unable to turn following the contact. The caution is out.

Many drivers hit the pit lane to remove the softer red tires.

Green, Newgarden leads Herts and Palou.

Lap 10, Newgarden leads Herta by 4 seconds.

Lap 15, Rossi has a damaged front wing from lap 1 contact. He’s struggling to turn and Dixon is all over his bumper for 5th. Dixon gits the push to pass button and he’s clear.

Lap 16, Marcus Ericsson looks to the outside of Rinus VeeKay as VeeKay blocks the inside lane. VeeKay comes back across the track to get a better entry to the corner but Ericsson is already there! Veekay pinches Ericsson into the wall and VeeKay has a flat tire and hits the pits under green.

Lap 17, Rossi hits the pit lane to swap to black tires and a wing change. He’ll lose a lot of track position.

Lap 20

Lap 20, Dalton Kellett has stopped at the edge of the pit lane after a pit stop. The right rear tire is still on but the wheel nut has come off.

Lap 21, Newgarden pits early along with all of the leaders. They are expecting a caution for Kellett.

Lap 22, Kellett’s team has retrieved the car from the edge of the pit lane. They pull the car back into the box for repairs. There won’t be a caution.

Lap 23, Newgarden leads Power by 5.5 seconds. Power has yet to pit, he’s the only car yet to pit. Ericsson is up to 6th from 22nd.

Lap 27, Power hits the pit lane for the first time. He goes from blacks to blacks. Power and Newgarden will both run softer reds in the final stint of the race. Herta takes over 2nd as Newgarden leads by 10 seconds.

Lap 29, Grosjean looks to the inside under late braking on Harvey in turn six. Harvey turns in and spins. He keeps it fired but he has a flat, no caution.

Lap 43, Rinus VeeKay spins the tires off the corner and nearly slaps the wall. He hits the pit lane to begin the final pit cycle.

Lap 45, Newgarden leads Herta by 5 seconds. Herta has closed the gap by half ahead of the final stint.

Lap 46

Lap 46, Herta pits from 2nd. Palou, Rahal and Dixon pit as well. All those teams install the harder black tires. Herta will be on the charge for the rest of this race.

Lap 47, Newgarden pits from the race lead. He’ll install the softer red tires, it’s a used set. Newgarden will open the gap early but he’s going to start fading quickly.

Lap 48, Newgarden leads Herta by 3 seconds.

Lap 52, Herta has closed the gap to 0.6 seconds. It’s a battle for the win in the Grand Prix of Detroit!

Lap 54

Lap 54, Jimmie Johnson spins in turn one, just ahead of the leaders. The car is stalled and the caution is out.

Green, Newgarden leads Herta. Pato O’Ward dives to the inside of Dixon and takes 5th behind them. Newgarden opens a 1 second gap to Herta.

12 to go, Romain Grosjean spins and the front brakes are on fire. He climbs from the car and the caution is out.

Green, Newgarden gets the jump and he’s clear by two car lengths in turn one. Pato O’Ward dives to the inside of Rahal in turn one and takes 4th. O’Ward isn’t done, he drives right by Palou.

7 to go

7 to go, Newgarden leads by 1 seconds. Herta runs 2nd with O’Ward right on his bumper. The red tires are an avantage on restarts but it’s going to swing the other way as the tires warm up.

6 to go, O’Ward looks inside of Herta. They nearly touch by O’Ward takes the position! Newgarden leads O’Ward by 1 second.

4 to go, O’Ward has climbed to the bumper of Newgarden. Herta has closed to both of them as Newgarden slows the train.

3 to go, O’Ward has a run. Newgarden pulls to the inside to block. Herta looks to the outside of both of them but he cooks the corner and smokes the tires. Herta loses 15 car lengths as he gathers it up.

Newgarden spins the tires off the corner. O’Ward looks to the inside. Newgarden pinches him on the straight. They bang wheels at high speed! O’Ward forces it through on the inside, O’Ward leads!

White flag, O’Ward leads Newgarden by 5 seconds. Newgarden has a train of cars behind him as he blocks the rest of the field with worn tires.

Out front, O’Ward takes the win in the Detroit Grand Prix!
