Indycar race results from the Nashville Street Circuit

Today, the Music City Grand Prix makes it’s debut. The NTT Indycar Series is set to race on the streets of Downtown Nashville, Tennessee. It’s the 2.17-mile Nashville Street Course with a packed city of open wheel fans.

Race Report

Laps: 80

Green flag, Herta gets the jump and he leads into turn one. Rossi dives to the inside of Dixon. Dixon turns in but quickly makes room for Rossi. Rossi to 2nd.

Lap 2, Dalton Kellett has stalled just passed the finish line and the caution is out.

Jimmie Johnson heads for the pit lane for a new front wing.

Green, Marcus Ericsson drives over the back of Sebastien Bourdais! Ericsson climbs over the back of his car. The green flag is still out. Both those cars limp back to the pit lane.

Lap 5, debris is all over the track and the caution is out.

Green, Herta leads Rossi and Dixon. Herta opens up a gap of 1 second in a hurry.

Penalty: Marcus Ericsson has been penalized with a stop and go penalty.

Lap 15, Herta leads Rossi by 2.5 seconds.

Lap 16, Scott McLaughlin spins after contact with Ed Jones in turn four. The caution is back out.

Palou, Newgarden, Hunter-Reay and many others hit the pit lane.

Red Flag

Green, Will Power dives to the inside of Simon Pagenaud! They bang, wheel to wheel and Pagenaud is shoved into the wall. The track is completely blocked and many cars pile into Pagenaud. Others come to a complete stop and make a parking lot out of the race track. The red flag is out.

Penalty: Jimmie Johnson has been disqualified for unapproved work under the red flag.

Green, Herta leads Rossi as the race restarts on lap 24.

Lap 30, Herta leads Rossi by 6 seconds.

Lap 31, Rinus VeeKay locks up and finds the tire barrier. He’s stuck and the caution is back out. The big lead is erased.

Pit drama

Herta and most of the leaders hit the pit lane under yellow. Herta wins the race to the pit exit and he exits right behind the pace car in 4th!

Before the stop, Herta left a huge gap to the pace car then he dove to the pit lane. The pace car was moving so slow to let the field catch up that Herta almost beat the pace car to the exit, after his stop. Ericsson takes over the race lead after going airborne earlier in the event with Hunter-Reay in 2nd.

Green, Ericsson leads on lap 37. Herta looks inside of Hinchcliffe over the bridge and he wins the race to turn 4, Herta to 3rd.

Lap 38, Herta dives inside of Hunter-Reay and forces the issue in a narrow section of the track, Herta to 2nd.

Lap 40, Ericsson leads Herta. Herta climbs right to his bumper through any tight section but Ericsson drives away on any long straight. Ericsson has far less downforce. Rossi closes on both of them.

Lap 41

Lap 41, Will Power looks inside of Max McLaughlin with a late dive to the inside. McLaughlin spins, collects Dalton Kellett and the caution is out.

Ericsson and Rossi hit the pit lane. No tires for Rossi, fuel only. Herta cycles back to the race lead.

Green flag, Herta leads Newgarden on the lap 51 restart. He opens a 1 second gap in a hurry.

O’Ward locks up on new tires and pushes Rossi in the wall behind them. O’Ward is stalled in the tire barrier and the caution is out.

Herta, Newgarden and others hit the pit lane. Herta restarts 8th. Grosjean and Ericsson cycle to the front.

Lap 54

Green, Grosjean leads the lap 54 restart.

Lap 55, Cody Ware is around on his own and he’s stalled. The caution is back out.

Grosjean pits under yellow. Ericsson takes over the race lead.

Green, Ericsson leads Dixon. Herta is forcing the issue and climbing through the field behind them.

Lap 60, Herta has a run on Hinchcliffe off turn 3 and over the bridge. He wins the race to turn four, Herta takes 3rd.

Lap 62, Herta has a run on Dixon over the bridge. Dixon locks up as Herta looks to the inside, Herta to 2nd.

Lap 63

Lap 63, Herta is all over the bumper of Ericsson in the battle for the win. He can’t figure out a way by as Ericsson gaps him on every straight with less downforce. Ericsson is also on the softer red tires while Herta is on harder black tires.

Penalty: O’Ward has been hit with a drive through penalty for avoidable contact.

Lap 68, Pagenaud tags the wall after contact with Grosjean. He’s broken a wheel, no caution.

12 to go, Herta locks up into turn four and he nearly tags the wall.

6 to go, Colton Herta locks it up and slams the wall in turn 9! The red flag is out as track workers go to repair the wall.

Green, Ericsson leads Dixon and Hinchcliffe with 2 laps to go.

1 to go, Ericsson leads Dixon by four car lengths.
