Daytona Race Results: August 28, 2021 (NASCAR Cup Series)

NASCAR results from the regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway

Tonight, the NASCAR Cup Series unloads in Daytona Beach, FL. It’s the regular-season finale on the 2.5-mile oval of Daytona International Speedway.

Tonight, 16 drivers will leave the track and head into the NASCAR Playoffs. Additionally, Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin are in a battle for the regular-season championship and the bonus points that come with it.

Larson was scheduled to start from the pole position. However, he’ll drop to the tail of the field for the start after inspection failures.

Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 50 (1-50 / 160)

Green flag, they run side by side into turn one. Byron clears him on the outside and he drops to the inside lane. Byron blocks both lanes.

Lap 7, Kevin Harvick leads a charge on the inside lane. He works inside of Byron and clear, Harvick leads.

Lap 12, Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace run side by side at the front.

Lap 15, Byron returns to the lead on the outside lane. He has help from Ross Chastain.

Lap 17, Chastain abandons the bottom lane and pulls in just ahead of Hamlin. Chastain bounces off the wall and gets heavy pushes from Hamlin. Chastain pulls out of line and heads for the pit lane with right side damage.

Lap 20, Elliott and Dillon run side by side for the lead.

Competition caution

Lap 21, the competition caution is out.

The field hits the pit lane. Elliott wins the race to the pit exit with fuel only.

Green, Elliott and Aric Almirola run side by side for the lead. Elliott clears him with a push from Logano.

Lap 42, Elliott leads the field, single file around the top but Elliott has debris on his grill. He points Logano to the inside, Logano to the lead. Elliott falls to 4th.

Lap 44, now Logano has trash on his grill. Elliott has a run, he cuts to the inside of Logano in turn three and returns to the lead.

2 to go in stage one, Elliott leads Austin Dillon. Dillon dives to the inside in turn three but Hamlin doesn’t go with him.

Hamlin locks bumpers with Elliott in turn three. They both lunge ahead of the field. Hamlin blocks a run from Kyle Busch off turn four. Kyle Busch gets sideways and nearly finds the outside wall but he saves it.

Chase Elliott wins stage one at Daytona!

Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 50 (51-100 / 160)

The field hits the pit lane. Many return to the pit lane right before the green to top off, they’ll try to make it to the end of the stage.

Pit Penalty: Logano will go to the rear as his crew threw equipment.

Green flag on stage two, Martin Truex Jr noses ahead of Elliott via the outside lane.

Lap 70, Christopher Bell side drafts Martin Truex Jr and dives to the inside. Bell clears Truex Jr and takes the lead.

Lap 77, Corey Lajoie and Tyler Reddick check up at the front of the field. 10 cars back, Almirola and Bowman spin due to the accordion.

Green, Logano clears Bell into turn one. Logano blocks run from both lanes down the back.

8 to go in stage two, Logano blocks both lanes.

6 to go, Logano gets too far out front, both lanes have a run at the same time. Blaney dives to the inside, side by side for the lead. Logano holds them off.

2 to go, Logano continues to block both lanes.

1 to go, Logano blocks a run from Austin Dillon.

Joey Logano wins stage two at Daytona International Speedway!

Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 60 (101-160 / 160)

The field hits the pit lane. Byron wins the race to the pit exit with two tires.

Green flag on stage three, Byron and Hamlin run side by side into turn one. Hamlin noses ahead with a push from Harvick. Hamlin blocks both lanes.

Lap 108, Harvick to the lead on the inside. He moves to the outside ahead of the nose of Hamlin.

47 to go, Chastain leads by three car lengths. Runs come from both lanes. Ryan Blaney to the lead on the inside.

38 to go, all the Fords hit the pit lane.

20 to go, Garrett Smithley spins on his own off turn four. Joey Gase and Cody Ware are tangled. All three Rick Ware Racing cars have crashed each other and the caution is out.

The Toyotas and Fords hit the pit lane. Larson and Elliott join them for four tires.

Pit penalty: Austin Dillon will go to the rear for a violation.

Green, Logano leads Blamey off turn two.

15 to go

15 to go, Martin Truex Jr checks up and gets turned by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Byron, Reddick, Suarez, Briscoe and others are collected. The red flag is out for cleanup.

As the yellow returns, Austin Dillon hits the pit lane and the crew goes to the work changing the battery.

Green, Blaney stalls his launch, Logano cuts to the inside and leads with a push from Blaney into turn one.

7 to go, Buescher, Elliott and Hamlin lock bumpers and Buescher is shoved to the lead.

6 to go, Hamlin pushes Elliott to the lead on the inside. Buscher gets put in the middle as they go by him on both sides.

5 to go, Elliott leads Hamlin on the outside lane. Joey Logano has a flat tire into turn three! He saves it from spinning out. Logano hits the pit lane under green.

4 to go, DiBenedetto pulls to the outside of Elliott.

3 to go, DiBenedetto has a run on Elliott into turn three with a push from Hamlin. Elliott blocks low, DiBenedetto moves high and Elliott blocks again. All three are in the wall. Elliott has a flat tire and spins in front of the field. 10 plus cars are collected.

NASCAR Overtime

Chris Buescher and Ryan Blaney lead them to the restart. Green, White and Checkered with complete the race.

Green, Blaney noses ahead into turn one with a push from Corey LaJoie.

White, Blaney leads LaJoie by five car lengths. Blaney blocks LaJoie and Harvick takes over 2nd.

Kurt Busch turns Daniel Suarez down the back stretch. Suarez clips Harvick and 10 more cars are collected.

The caution is out and Ryan Blaney wins at Daytona International Speedway! Kyle Larson wins the regular-season championship!
