Today, the Indycar Series is set to begin their 2022 racing season in the sunny state of Florida. It’s the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on the city streets.

Race Report

Green flag, McLaughlin leads as Power spins the tires at the launch. Power throws a huge block on Romain Grosjean and they make contact in turn one. Power is the only car in the top 10 on harder tires. Colton Herta has taken over 2nd as Power falls to 4th.

Lap 9, McLaughlin leads Herta by 1.7 seconds. Many cars are heading for the pit lane to make this a three stop race. Others are staying out, including the leader, likely a 2 stop race for them.

Lap 24, Will Power is running 2nd. with the harder tire He was 6 seconds back of McLaughlin, now it’s just 3.5. The soft tires are fading on McLaughlin.

Lap 25

Lap 25, David Malukas gets into the marbles and slams the wall. He stalls the it’s a full course yellow.

The leaders hit the pit lane. McLaughlin wins the race to the pit exit. Rossi takes over the lead as he and 10 others stay out.

Green, Rossi leads Dixon into turn one.

Lap 37, Power is now on the softer red tires and he’s struggling to hold 13th with a line of cars behind him.

Lap 57, most of the cars on a three stop strategy have hit the pits. Rinus VeeKay leads Scott McLaughlin by 1.1 seconds. Veekay’s tires are 7 laps older.

Lap 61, Dalton Kellett hits the pit lane with gearbox issues.

Lap 63, VeeKay hits the pit lane. He’ll likely need a full course yellow to make it from here without another stop. McLaughlin now leads Palou by 1 second.

Lap 65

Lap 65, McLaughlin heads for the pit lane for his final pit stop. However, McLaughlin cycles out ahead of VeeKay on the track with Mclaughlin in 12th. All 11 cars ahead still need to stop once more.

27 to go, Dixon leads McLaughlin by 13.1 seconds on tires that are 17 laps older. Dalton Kellett spins and comes to a stop but he’s able to make it roll again. That was nearly a race changing caution.

21 to go, Dixon heads to the pits for his final stop. However, the three stop strategy has him back on track in 9th. McLaughlin is back to the lead.

13 to go, mcLaughlin is struggling with the lap car of Jimmie Johnson. Meanwhile, Johnson’s teammate, Alex Palou is closing fast. McLaughlin forces his way through in turn one.

12 to go, McLaughlin leads Palou by just 0.5 seconds.

3 to go

3 to go, Palou has a run on McLaughlin into turn one! He closes to within a car length but he’s not close enough to make a move.

2 to go, Palou remains a car length behind under braking into turn one.

1 to go, the gap remains the same. Lap traffic sits just ahead of McLaughlin and he’s struggling to get by.

McLaughlin throws a block into the final corner. He holds him off, Scott McLaughlin wins the grand Prix of St. Petersburg!
