Texas Race Results: March 20, 2022 (Indycar Series)

Race Report

Green flag, Rosenqvist gets the jump and leads into turn one. They scatted three wide behind him.

Lap 2, McLaughlin has a run off turn four. He moves to the outside and completes the pass for the lead as they roll back into turn one.

Lap 12, caution as Alexander Rossi is coasting on the apron.

Lap 39, Indycar rookie Kyle Kirkwood is up to 9th after starting 17th. He’s driving by them on the outside lane.

Lap 73, McLaiughlin cycles back to the lead following a round of pit stops.He leads Newgarden by 12 seconds.

Pit Penalty: Conor Daly will serve a pass through after speeding on the pit lane.

Lap 84, McLaughlin is working heavy lap traffic. Just ahead is 19th place runner, Jimmie Johnson.

Lap 95, McLaughlin leads Newgarden by 6 seconds. McLaughlin gave up on trying to pass the lap cars, he just lifted and gave them a gap so he doesn’t wear out his tires. He has a 12 second lead and was able to use it.

Lap 99

Lap 99, Devlin DeFrancesco misses the bottom into turn one. He goes up the track and forces Takuma Sato to run wide. Sato chases it up the banking and makes light contact with the outside wall. The caution is out.

Trouble for Romain Grosjean! He has a mechanical failure following the pit stop.

Green, McLaughlin leads Newgarden. Kyle Kirkwood is working the outside lane in turn four. He gets a but too hard and the backend comes around. He slams the wall and the caution is out.

Lap 129

Lap 129, Graham Rahal and Helio Castroneves run side by side into turn three. Devlin DeFrancesco looks to the inside of both and makes it three wide. They run out of room in a hurry and all three cars slam the outside wall. The caution is back out.

Felix Rosenqvist hits the pits with a mechanical issue. He’s done for the day.

Lap 150, Josef Newgarden has a run on McLaughlin off turn four. He looks to the outside and clears him before turn one, Newgarden to the lead! Rinus VeeKay is driving by them on the outside, he flying through the field.

Lap 153, McLaughlin looks to the outside of Newgarden off turn four. McLaughlin back to the lead, VeeKay follows him through to take 2nd.

Lap 159

Lap 159, VeeKay has a run off turn four. He looks to the outside of McLaughlin and he’s clear into turn one, Rinus VeeKay to the lead.

Lap 164, VeeKay checks up early into turn one. McLaughlin is on his gearbox and checks up as a result. Will Power looks to the outside and drives around both of them into turn one, Power leads.

Lap 174, Jimmie Johnson drives around the outside of Ferrucci to take 9th. This is the best race of his Indycar career so far.

Lap 184, Marcus Ericsson has a run on McLaughlin for 2nd. He pinches McLaughlin into turn one, they fight for space and Ericsson takes 2nd away. He’s not done as Ericsson has a run on Power off turn two. Ericsson dives to the inside and takes the lead away in turn three.

Lap 190, Slow pit stop for Colton Herta as the gun gets stuck on the wheel.

42 to go

42 to go, McLaughlin cycles to the lead after the final round of pit stops are complete. Newgarden runs 2nd, Ericsson 3rd. Many of the leaders are in fuel saving mode.

20 to go, Mclaughlin leads teammate Newgarden. Both cars are in fuel saving mode.

17 to go, Lundgaard is in the wall off turn four after running 13th, no caution.

10 to go, McLaughlin leads Newgarden by 5 car lengths. Jimmie Johnson drives by Simon Pagenaud to take 5th away!

5 to go, McLaughlin passes the lap car of Colton Herta. Herta drops to the bottom and puts Newgarden in dirty air. Newgarden loses ground but quickly clears Herta.

3 to go, Newgarden has closed the gap to McLaughlin. More lap cars sit ahead of the leader.

1 to go, McLaughlin is closing quickly on lap traffic! Newgarden closes into turn three. McLaughlin can;t find a way by the lap cars. Josef Newgarden looks to the outside in the final corner!

They run side by side to the line, Josef Newgarden wins at Texas Motor Speedway!
