Colton Herta has won 7 Indycar races over his five year career. However, he’s still not adequate for F1, per a goofy licence system that’s extra difficult on American drivers.

Red Bull was interested in signing Herta to drive for their AlphaTauri team in 2023. The team noted that Herta would replace Pierre Gasly, if Herta could meet requirements.

This week, the team announced they have abandoned those efforts.

In order to race in F1, Harta needed the mandatory superlicence. 40 points would have granted him the licence automatically. However, results from Indycar only offered 32 of the 40 points.

Despite this, Red Bull requested an exemption from the FIA. That request has been denied.

Had Herta won the Indycar championship, he would have earned enough points. Options remained for Herta to race in several international winter series to obtain additional points. However, Red Bull had opted not to use that option due to risks.

Both the F2 and Indycar champion earn enough points to automatically claim a superlicence. Yet, from 2nd place down, less points are offered to Indycar drivers over the F2 standings. The FIA gives more weight to F2 competition.

Had Herta left his Andretti contract in Indycar, then also not reached the points required for a superlicence, then he would have been out of an Indycar ride as well as a F1 ride in 2023.

“It’s a shame that people don’t realize what value an American driver, especially a guy like Colton Herta, would have for the booming American market, especially with three F1 races,” Helmut Marko of Red Bull Racing told Motorsport-Total.

Zak Brown comments

“I think the whole licensing system needs to be reviewed,” McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown stated at Laguna Seca.

“I get that the rules are what the rules are and that rules shouldn’t be broken, but I question whether just because those are the rules that are in place now that those are the correct rules.

“Someone of Colton’s caliber, or Pato’s caliber or half the [IndyCar] field are Formula 1 capable.

“If someone like Colton who’s won a lot of IndyCar races isn’t eligible for a superlicence then I think we need to review the superlicence system.”

“I don’t think Max Verstappen would have been eligible for a superlicence, I don’t think Kimi Raikkonen would have been eligible for a superlicence,” Brown added as both of those drivers skipped F2.

Graham Rahal comments

“F1 is an elitist sport. They don’t want us. Remember that,” Graham Rahal stated via social media.

“They want US companies money, they want wealthy US individuals money. But they don’t care about the rest. Always has been that way, always will be.”

“And for those who want to say that Colton Herta didn’t ‘earn’ the right. You’re off base. He’s as talented if not more than the rest. He’s a proven winner. He came to the top, and has done exceptionally well. F1 has had ride buyers for years who don’t hold a candle to CH. FACTS!”

Alexander Rossi comments

Rossi competed in F1 back in 2015. He’s since made the move to Indycar.

“I’ve kept my mouth shut long enough, so here goes,” Alexander Rossi opened via social media.

“I’m so sick and tired of this back and forth regarding super licence points. The whole premise of it was to keep people from buying their way into F1 and allowing talent to be the motivating factor. That’s great.”

“We all agree Colton has the talent and capability to be in F1. That’s also great and he should get that opportunity if it’s offered to him. Period.”

“Motorsport still remains as the most high profile sport in the world where money can outweigh talent. What is disappointing and in my opinion, the fundamental problem, is that the sporting element so often took a backseat to the business side that there had to be a method put in place in order for certain teams to stop taking drivers solely based on their financial backing.”

“Ultimately, these past decisions, whether out of greed or necessity, is what cost Colton the opportunity to make the decision for himself as to if he wanted to alter career paths and race in F1. Not points on a licence.”

F1 star Kimi Raikkonen isn’t worried of potential NASCAR failure, at all https://racingnews.co/2022/08/21/f1-star-kimi-raikkonen-isnt-worried-of-potential-nascar-failure-at-all/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=FBGroup%20F1%20Racing%20News https://racingnews.co/2022/08/21/f1-star-kimi-raikkonen-isnt-worried-of-potential-nascar-failure-at-all/#respond Sun, 21 Aug 2022 11:01:00 +0000 Shane Walters https://racingnews.co/?p=102068 “What do I have to lose? That I’m bad in NASCAR racing? I don’t care.”

Kimi Raikkonen is a F1 World Champion driver with nothing to prove. Despite that, the 42-year-old is venturing way out to make his first-career NASCAR Cup Series start.

He’s elected for an unfamiliar path, similar to Jimmie Johnson, the 7-time NASCAR champ who recently decided to run full-time in the INDYCAR Series. Why? Just like Jimmie Johnson, because he wants to.

This weekend, Raikkonen will drive the No. 91 car fielded by Trackhouse Racing. The team has proven to be capable of winning. The car is the start of what could be a part-time effort in 2023 that sees a rotation of racers from various forms of motorsports, outside of a stock car oval background.

The driver got his first taste of a Cup car earlier this week. That test session was run at Virginia International Raceway in a car fielded by a team other than Trackhouse, per the new NASCAR testing rules.

Back in 2011, Raikkonen ran a single NASCAR Truck Series event at Charlotte Motor Speedway where he finished 15th. He also ran a NASCAR Xfinity Series machine at the same track, finishing 27th. Both of those races were run on an oval, unfamiliar territory for the driver from Finland.

He makes his race debut on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, Raikkonen sat down to discuss his return to the world of NASCAR.

Kimi Raikkonen comments on NASCAR test; Set for Watkins Glen

Kimi Raikkonen compares the vibes from NASCAR to F1

“It’s a lot different, than when I was here last time. It’s very relaxed, it’s completely different. The schedule is a lot different than when I was here last time,” Kimi Raikkonen said ahead of qualifying at Watkins Glen.

“What happened to many sports after COVID. They figure it out and maybe we don’t need to spend as many days over the weekend.”

“Obviously, that’s not ideal for me with practice. But, that’s how it is. And, I really like it. It’s relaxed and nice. Family atmosphere, I like it.”

“The rules are slightly different here than say what I’m used to. Very easy to talk to the other drivers. Which is maybe a bit different than where I come from and what I’m used to.”

Raikkonen isn’t worried about anything

There was a time in NASCAR where road course ringers were a real threat at road courses. That’s changed drastically as road courses became a much more important factor on the schedule.

Many drivers have come from the road racing ranks and most of them aren’t around very long. But, Kimi doesn’t care about any of that…

“I don’t see any risk. What do I have to lose? That I’m bad in NASCAR racing? I don’t care. I do it for myself. Even if I did 20 races, they all could be bad, for many reasons. But, I don’t see any negative.”

“NASCAR is not as well known [In Europe]. But, I’m sure there’s a lot of drivers that would like to have a chance. But, it’s not very easy. So, maybe it will open some doors.”

Watkins Glen TV Schedule

Does Kimi have more plans with Trackhouse Racing?

“There’s absolutely no plans for anything after this,” Raikkonen explained.

“I want to have fun. But, try to do as well as we can. We’ll see what comes out of it.

Kimi also talked about his first trip to Watkins Glen.

Raikkonen concluded, “It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere, but I enjoy that.”

“This car is a lower barrier of entry for drivers from other disciplines. It’s much more consistent with other road racing cars, globally. The transition to learn the car, is a lot more simple,” Trackhouse Racing co-owner Justin Marks stated.

“We haven’t hired one person to field this 3rd car. A lot of people have been doing time and a half to get this car to go.”

“This is really just to see what it looks like to field a part-time third car. So, this will be the only event, this year.”

“Project 91, the road courses are the ideal place to bring guys like Kimi in. Just because it’s a quicker learning curve and they can get up to speed a lot more quickly, than to go to ovals.”

“I think ultimately, Project 91 is a project that operates at all the road courses during the season. Then, potentially the Daytona 500 or Coca-Cola 600. At some point, you run so many races that you have to look at fielding a 3rd full-time car.”

“It’s potentially a 6-8 race program for next year and beyond.”

Back in 2011, Kimi Raikkonen ventured into NASCAR with 1 race in NASCAR Xfinity Series and another in the Truck Series. This weekend, he makes his NASCAR Cup Series debut.

View the Kimi Raikkonen paint scheme below.

He’s driving a third entry for Trackhouse Racing via the No. 91. The car was announced earlier this year and will see a rotation of elite drivers from outside the world of stock car racing. The F1 champion is the first driver to sit in the seat.

Earlier this week, Raikkonen ran a short test at Virginia International Raceway. The track is absent from the Cup schedule. It just gave Raikkonen a chance to get familar with the machine.

Several months ago, NASCAR adjusted their testing rules for ‘elite’ drivers. For 2022, most race weekends see a brief 20 minute practice session. On top of a testing ban, that makes it extremely difficult for Raikkonen and other drivers coming from outside the traditional NASCAR ladder system.

Now, Raikkonen is ready. He’ll make his debut this weekend at Watkins Glen International.

“I don’t have anything to compare but it was nice to get some laps, even though it;s not exactly the same car that we’re going to race,” Kimi Raikkonen stated.

“I’m sure it will be a bit easier going into practice on the race day. I have little experience with the Cup car.”

“It’s honestly, more or less, what I expected. It’s ok, the same thing happens with a normal car, when the tires get hot you start sliding more. So far, it’s been good.”

“Without [the test], practice and qualifying would be a lot harder. Thanks to NASCAR to have those few laps.”

“It’s been fun being in the car. I haven’t driven any race car since the last F1 race.”

Raikkonen’s last F1 race was at the end of the 2021 season.
