10 NASCAR crew members suspended after Dover Motor Speedway

Last weekend, NASCAR unloaded in Dover, Delaware. The 1-mile track hosted the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series.

On Tuesday afternoon, NASCAR released the weekly penalty report. 7 crew members have been suspended.

AJ Allmendinger and Denny Hamlin each had a wheel become detached during the NASCAR Cup Series race. In the Xfinity Series race, Sam Mayer had the same issue. All three teams will lose three crew members for the next four events.

NASCAR Xfinity Series

Driver: No. 11 Denny Hamlin

Violation Date: May 1-2, 2022

Sections: (10.5.2.6) Loss or separation of an improperly installed tire/wheel from the vehicle with the note: Loss of tire/wheel during the event.

Penalty: Crew chief Chris Gabehart and crew members Blake Houston (front changer) along with Derrell Edwards (jack) are suspended for the next four races.

Driver: No. 16 AJ Allmendinger

Violation Date: May 1-2, 2022

Sections: (10.5.2.6) Loss or separation of an improperly installed tire/wheel from the vehicle with the note: Loss of tire/wheel during the event.

Penalty: Crew chief Matt Swiderski and crew members Keiston France (front changer) along with Jonathan Willard (jack) are suspended for the next four races.

NASCAR Xfinity Series

Driver: Sam Mayer #1

Infraction Date: April 30, 2022 (Post-Race)

Sections: (10.5.2.6) Loss or separation of an improperly installed tire/wheel from the vehicle with the note: Loss of tire/wheel during the event.

Penalty: Crew chief Taylor Moyer and crew members Orane Ossowski (rear changer) along with Markus Pierce-Brewster (jack) are suspended for the next four races.

Driver: AJ Allmendinger #16

Infraction Date: April 30, 2022 (Post-Race)

Level: Safety

Infraction: Sections 10.9.10.4 – Tires and Wheels – Note: Lug nut(s) not properly installed.

Penalty: Crew chief ( Bruce Schlicker ) has been fined $5,000.

Other Penalties

Jason Houghtaling has been indefinitely suspended by NASCAR. The violation is related to Sections 4.4.e (NASCAR Member Code of Conduct).

Houghtaling was listed as the crew chief for Jesse Iwuji during the first 8 races of the season.

Update: Penalty appealed

On Wednesday, Joe Gibbs Racing told NASCAR of their intentions to appeal the penalty. With the appeal, the No. 11 team suspensions are paused until the appeal is heard.
