Chase Elliott out due to snowboarding injury; Surgery scheduled

The NASCAR driver is going into surgery tonight

This weekend, NASCAR unloads in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 1.5-mile track will host the third race of the season.

Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 will not take part in the event. He was injured in a snowboarding incident.

The 27-year-old suffered the injury to his left leg. It happened today and took place in Colorado.

He’s scheduled to go into surgery, tonight.

Josh Berry will fill the seat of the No. 9 this weekend at Las Vegas. Berry is a five-time winner in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and currently competes full-time in the division for JR Motorsports.

Berry has two starts in the NASCAR Cup Series.

The situation beyond this weekend is still unclear. However, more details are expected to be released from the team later on.

When he returns, Elliott will need an exemption from NASCAR to compete for the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series championship. Drivers must run every race to compete. However, NASCAR typically hands out exemptions for injuries.

Update: It has been released that Elliott suffered a fractured tibia.

Rick Hendrick comments

“Chase’s health is our primary concern,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports.

“He’s spoken with several members of our team and is understandably disappointed to miss time in the car. Of course, he has our full support, and we’ll provide any resources he needs.”

Hendrick added, “We hope to share another update later this weekend.”

Elliott has won NASCAR’s most popular driver award for the last 5 years.

Josh Berry comments

“It’s been an interesting couple hours,” Josh Berry told Fox Sports.

“I just hope Chase will recover and be back in the thing soon. But, it’s really a great opportunity for me.”

“I want to thank Mr. Hendrick that they think enough of me, to do it. It will be a big night and day tomorrow.”

Berry has two wins at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in just four Xfinity starts.
