Denny Hamlin calls the Talladega race a Petty Driving Experience

Denny Hamlin isn’t pleased with the race at Talladega Superspeedway over the team radio

NASCAR Cup Series drivers are currently racing at Talladega Superspeedway. NASCAR brought in a new rules package and a different length of stages for this event.

Stage one is 98 laps of the 188 scheduled distance. It’s the longest stage of the race, by design.

NASCAR wanted the final two stages of the race to be shorter and keep teams from saving fuel. However, most of the field still elected to save fuel in stage one.

Most of the field ran 3 seconds off the pace, on purpose. By saving fuel, teams make their pit stops shorter as they need less fuel.

“This is like if the Richard Petty Driver’s Experience had a race,” Denny Hamlin stated over the team radio.

Meanwhile, all three RFK Racing drivers elected for a different strategy. They lined up and took off from the pack.

By the time they reached the first pit stop, the three RFK cars were 41 seconds ahead of 4th place. They didn’t save fuel at all. Chris Buescher still drove to the stage one win.

The race is currently underway.
