Main Event – Report
Chris Simpson and Mike Spatola set the front row for the main event.
Brandon Sheppard had issues in his qualifying laps. He’s been dominant all week but was forced to start at the tail in his heat race. He then drove through the field to finish 2nd in his heat. He’ll start 8th in tonight’s main.
The field lines up in a four wide salute for the Arizona dirt racing fans. 30 laps of dirt late model racing are up next…
Green flag, Spatola is clear by 3 car lengths into turn one. The caution is out and the race will be restarted.
Green attempt number two, Simpson is clear by a car length into turn one. Spatola and Weiss battle side by side for 2nd.
Lap 2, they run three wide for the lead as they head back to turn one. Simpson holds the lead off turn two, Spatola holds 2nd.
Lap 5, Simpson rolls the cushion. Spatola mirrors his line.
Lap 6, Spatola pushes into turn one, Weiss drives by on the bottom.
Weiss is running down the race leader. Simpson remains on the cushion. Weiss is working the bottom and closing.
Lap 8, Dillard is around and the caution is out.
Green, Simpson and Weiss roll the bottom.
Simpson quickly bails on the bottom and heads back to the top. Two car lengths back, Weiss rolls the bottom. Brian Shirley runs 3rd and Brandon Sheppard has sliced through the field to 4th.
Lap 14, Shirley clears Weiss for 2nd.
Lap 17, Shirley dives to the bottom and pulls even with Simpson. Weiss looks to the inside of both of them, three wide for the lead at the line. Simpson holds the lead.
Lap 20, Shirley has a run on the bottom. He noses ahead but Simpson carried the momentum off the corner.
Lap 21, the leaders race through lap traffic. Lap 22, Shirley clears Simpson on the bottom. Simpson jumps the cushion and falls to 4th.
The caution is out for a spin behind them.
Green, Shirley leads Sheppard.
Lap 23, Shirley knocks the cushion. Sheppard rolls the bottom. Shirley is opening the gap.
Lap 25, Brian Birkhofer is around with nose damage and the caution is out.
Green, Shirley leads. Sheppard bicycles into turn one but he still has a run off turn two.
Lap 27, Shirley knocks the cushion. Sheppard pulls even on the bottom but Shirley has the momentum off the corner.
2 laps to go, Shirley has opened the gap to four car lengths.
