Arizona Speedway results from the final night of the Wild West Shootout
It’s night six of the 2020 Wild West Shootout. Arizona Speedway, a 1/3-mile oval is set to conclude the week long dirt late model show in the southwest.

Brian Shirley could be handed a massive bonus check after he’s already picked up multiple wins this week. Another one would further increase his bonus.
However, issues for Shirley in qualifying as he failed to turn a lap in his session. He tagged the wall before completing a lap. Last night’s winner is in a hole early for the final night of the show.
Wild West Shootout
Main Event – Report
Track prep has been heavy ahead of this main event. They tilled the top and dropped some water on it before packing it back down.
Brandon Sheppard and Ricky Thornton Jr set the front row for the main event.
Brian Shirley was able to win the first of two B Main. He’s start toward the rear of the field. Look for Shirley to add some excitement to this race. He’ll start in 17th.
The field lines up in a four wide salute. It’s the final salute of the week for the Arizona dirt racing fans. 50 laps of dirt late model racing are up next…
Green, they run even into turn one. Thornton washes off the bottom as Sheppard has the grip around the top. Sheppard leads off turn two.
Cade Dillard swept by Thornton as he gathered it up. Brian Shirley is up to 13th.
Lap 2, Terry Phillips is slow with a flat left rear and the caution is out.
Green, Sheppard leads. Ricky Thornton Jr retakes 2nd.
Lap 8, Ricky Weiss has climbed from 9th to 5th. He’s working the bottom and charging to the front.
Lap 10, Brian Shirley has cracked the top 10. Lots of cars are charging for deep in the field. This race is likely to change drastically in a few laps.
Lap 11, Sheppard leads Thornton by 3 car lengths as both run the cushion. Cade Dillard works the middle and pulls to the door of Thornton but can’t complete the pass.
Sheppard is working heavy lap traffic. They run side by side ahead of him. Thornton Jr is closing quickly.
Lap 13, Frank Heckenast Jr is slow and the caution is out.
Green, Sheppard leads. Thornton and Dillard run side by side for 2nd. Weiss looks to the inside of both and he makes it three wide. Weiss and Dillard make contact.
As the field rubs doors, Shirley is driving by them all. Shirley climbs to 5th.
Lap 15, Cade Dillard is around and the caution is out. He likely had contact with someone, it’s unclear.
Green, Sheppard leads. Thornton Jr and Johnny Scott run side by side for 2nd. Shirley climbs to 4th.
Lap 17, Shirley slides Scott for 3rd.
Lap 20, Thornton Jr runs wide into turn one. Shirley drives right by on the bottom.
Lap 22, Shirley closes to the rear bumper of Sheppard. The leader drives to the bottom and takes the line away. Shirley moves to the top.
Lap 24, Shirley has a run off turn four. He crosses under him, right under the fuel cell as Sheppard shuts the door.
Lap 25, Sheppard bounces through the ruts on the top. Shirley cuts to the lead. Inches apart for the race lead in Arizona!
Shirley misses the corner. As he runs over the cushion, Sheppard drives back to the lead.
Lap 29, Scott retakes 2nd as Shirley stumbles. He gathers it up quickly and Shirley moves back to 2nd. Sheppard leads by four car lengths.
Lap 33, Sheppard and Shirley run the cushion in turns three and four. They both run the middle in turns one and two. The leaders run nose to tail.
Slow car behind them and the caution is out. You can catch your breath.
Green, Sheppard leads. Shirley heads for the cushion in turn four as they head for the green. That didn’t work at all. Shirley falls to 5th before the start finish line.
Lap 36, Scott has closed to within a car length of the race leader. Shirley climbs back to 3rd behind them.
Lap 38, Shirley is exploring lanes. He slides into turn three, jumps over the cushion and knocks the wall hard with the right rear. Shirley is still rolling but the right front was catapulted into the wall as well. We’re still green.
Lap 44, Sheppard leads Scott by a car length.
Lap 47, Sheppard struggles with lap traffic. Scott climbs right to his bumper. Now the lap traffic stalls Scott and the gap opens back up.
