William Byron: “He’s just an idiot.”
On Sunday, NASCAR unloaded in Darlington, South Carolina. The 1.366-mile track hosted the annual throwback weekend for the NASCAR Cup Series.
Hear from Joey Logano and William Byron after the bump and run for the win below.
With just 26 laps to go of 293, Joey Logano and William Byron lined up on the front row. Byron ran even with him on the inside. However, Byron pushed it on the inside lane and it got tight off turn two. Byron ran Logano up the track and into the outside wall. Byron took over the lead.
With 10 to go, Byron led by 1 second. With 5 to go, Logano had trimmed that to a half second.
With 2 to go, Logano closed the gap to just a car length. He was within striking distance and he struck.
Into turn three, Logano lined up the rear bumper of Byron. He pushed him into the corner. Byron got loose and chased it into the outside wall.
Logano went on to claim the win at Darlington Raceway! Byron coasted across the finish line with both right side tires flat.
Joey Logano comments on William Byron
After the win, Logano climbed from his machine to a sea of cheers mixed with boos from the crowd.
“Yeah, you’re not going to put me in the wall and not get anything back. That’s how it works,” Logano told Fox Sports.
“I’ve never won here in a Cup race before. The coolest thing is getting this car in victory lane. This is the car where it all started for me back in 1995 in a quarter midget,” Logano referred to his throwback scheme.
Logano added, “All the young kids racing out there right now, this could be you. I got Silver City Quarter Midget club on the back. A really special day. Happy Mother’s Day!”
William Byron comments on Joey Logano
“We were really close off of two and I think it spooked him, got him tight and he was right against the wall. I got the lead,” Byron stated of the contact with 26 to go.
“He’s just an idiot. He does this stuff all the time. I’ve seen it with other guys.”
“I mean, he drove in there 10 mph too fast. With these Next Gen cars, he slammed me so hard, it knocked the whole right side off. No way to make the corner.”
“He’s just a moron. He can’t win a race. So he does it that way. I don’t know.”
Byron added, “It was close racing on the restart. We were faster than him. Obviously, at the end, the right rear was starting to go away and he didn’t even make it a contest.”
