The 2022 Indianapolis 500 featured a record-paying purse
On Sunday, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted the famed Indy 500. Marcus Ericson took the win, holding off a final lap charge from Pato O’Ward in a thrilling battle.

The total purse for the 2022 Indy 500 was $16,000,200. Race winner Marcus Ericsson took home $3.1 million of that.
Prior to last week’s race, the highest the highest Indy 500 purse was $14.4 million. That was paid in the 2008 Indianapolis 500.
Jimmie Johnson was awarded ‘Rookie of the Race’. He pocketed an extra $50,000 for the award.
Roger Penske comments
“The Indianapolis 500 is the greatest race in the world, and these drivers lay it all on the line for a chance to drink the winner’s milk and kiss the famous Yard of Bricks,” Roger Penske said.
He added, “This year’s record-setting purse is reflective of their tireless pursuit of history and the world-class talent they display on every lap.”
325,000 fans attended the 2022 Indianapolis 500. That marks the most attended sporting event in the world since the pandemic began.
