Report – Stage 1
Laps: 20 (1-20 / 90)
Green flag, Hamlin gets the jump and he’s clear before turn one. McDowell and Byron run side by side for 2nd up the hill, McDowell wins that battle.
Lap 3, McDowell is all over the bumper of Hamlin. Byron and Gibbs have run them both down, Hamlin is holding them up.
Lap 4, McDowell dives inside of Hamlin into turn one. They nearly touch, McDowell to the lead. Hamlin runs wide and Byron has a run, Byron to 2nd.
Lap 5, Daniel Suarez spins over the curbs exiting the chicane, no caution.
Lap 9, Harrison Burton spins with help from Andy Lally, no caution. Burton has to check up as Ty Dillon and Todd Gilliland rubbed doors, Lally didn’t know it.
Michael McDowell wins stage one at Watkins Glen International!

Pit Penalty: McDowell drove through too many pit boxes and he’ll serve a pass-through.
Lap 24, Byron cycles to the race lead. Hamlin trails by 1 second.

Lap 51, Byron leads Hamlin by 4 seconds. Kyle Larson drives deep into turn one and takes 3rd away from Ty Gibbs.
Lap 54, green flag pit stops are underway.
Lap 55, Chase Elliott is slow up the hill. He’s out of fuel! The leaders dive for the pit lane.
The caution is out as Elliott has come to a stop in the chicane. He gets a push back to the pit lane but he’ll be a lap down.
Pit Penalty: Kyle Larson is caught speeding on the pit lane and he’ll drop to the rear for the restart.
Green, Byron and Hamlin run side by side into turn one. They rub doors and Byron wins the race into turn two.
20 to go, Byron leads Hamlin by 1.5 seconds. Christopher Bell runs in 3rd.
15 to go, Michael McDowell slows with a mechanical issue. He heads for the pit lane under green.
5 to go, Byron leads Hamlin by 3 seconds.
