Tommy Baldwin Jr reveals cancer diagnosis; NASCAR comments

Former NASCAR Cup Series team owner issues statement

Tommy Baldwin Jr has sat on the pit box for 23 years in the NASCAR Cup Series. He has five wins as a NASCAR Cup Series crew chief.

He opened his own NASCAR Cup Series team in 2009. The team has run 525 Cup races, most recently in 2020.

Baldwin currently fields a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour machine full-time. Doug Coby is the driver and he currently sits 4th in the standings.

Earlier this season, Badlwin joined Rick Ware Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series to serve as the Competition Director for the team.

Tommy Baldwin Jr announces cancer diagnosis

On Monday, Tommy Baldwin Jr posted the following statement:

“Today, I post news that no one ever wants to hear … I have cancer,” Tommy Baldwin Jr opened via social media.

“It’s treatable, but this week of racing will be the last for a while for the Tommy Baldwin Racing team. Going to take a break & begin treatment to beat it into the ground.

“This is not a post for pity. I want to let the world know that if you don’t feel right, go get checked out by a doctor now. Don’t wait. If I can save one life by posting this, I have done my job.”

“Never be scared to go see the doctor – it could save your life. Take the message & share it with those you love before it’s too late. I will beat this challenge like every other. The grind begins now! Thanks to everyone for the support.

Baldwin concluded, “See you all at the track as soon as possible.”

Doug Coby comments

“A few minutes ago my car owner, crew chief and friend publically shared news about his recent cancer diagnosis,” Coby shared

“This is a reminder to all of us that racing is much bigger than competition on the track – it’s about family and the friendships we create and out community.”

“My thoughts are with TB and his family as he begins treatment and I know the racing community will rally around him with nothing but love and encouragement. You got this TB and we got you!”

“As far as my future competing in the remaining seven events of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, I have no comment at this time. Ask the important questions – not the ones that are irrelevant.”

NASCAR Statement

On Monday, NASCAR issued the following statement:

“Tommy Baldwin Jr. is a fighter, and NASCAR joins him in this fight, and fully supports his decision to concentrate on his treatment. We wish him well, and our thoughts and prayers are with Tommy and his loved ones at this time.”
