Bristol Results: September 16, 2023 (NASCAR Cup Series)

NASCAR race results from Bristol Motor Speedway; Playoff elimination event

NASCAR Cup Series drivers have unloaded in Bristol, Tennessee. The half-mile of Bristol Motor Speedway is set to host a playoff elimination race. 16 drivers remain in the championship battle, four will be eliminated after this race.

Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 125 (1-125 / 500)

Green flag, Hamlin stalls his start and teammate Bell drops to the inside lane and leads the field into turn one. McDowell takes 2nd off turn two.

Lap 3, Hamlin works under McDowell and reclaims 2nd.

Lap 25, Bell is stuck behind the lap car of Suarez. Hamlin is all over his bumper in the battle for the lead.

AJ Allmendinger bounces off the turn four wall after picking up marbles on the outside lane. Austin Cindric drives into the back of him and they both pick up heavy damage.

Bell, Hamlin and half the lead-lap cars head for the pit lane. McDowell wins the race to the pit exit with just two tires. Bubba Wallace and Corey LaJoie take over the front row, McDowell restarts 7th.

Pit Penalties: Larson, Briscoe and Hamlin will drop to the rear.

Green, Wallace and LaJoie fight for space off turn two. LaJoie wins the battle via the outside lane and he leads into turn three.

Lap 107, Light rain begins to fall and the caution is out.

Green, LaJoie clears Bell into turn one.

6 to go in stage one, LaJoie gets loose and misses the bottom into turn three. Bell works under him off turn four, Bell leads.

Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 125 (126-250 / 500)

The red flag is out due to weather.

Green flag on stage two, Bell clears Larson into turn one, Bell returns to the lead. Byron follows him through to take 2nd off turn two. Ty Gibbs works outside of Byron and Gibbs moves into 2nd.

Lap 179, Larson has found speed via the outside lane. He boxes Bell in behind lap traffic, Larson to the lead!

Lap 199, Larson works heavy lap traffic. Bell is working the top. Bell works alongside and he retakes the lead via the outside lane.

Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 250 (251-500 / 500)

Bell leads the field to the pit lane but it’s a slow stop and he’s off in 4th. Gibbs wins the race to the pit exit.

Green flag on stage three, Gibbs and Hamlin run side by side for the lead. Gibbs wins the battle via the outside lane.

Corey LaJoie spins off turn two! He tags the inside wall and comes back up the track into turn three. He collects Joey Logano, Ty Dillon and others are collected. Logano has picked up heavy left rear damage. The caution is out.

Lap 359, Hamlin works to the outside of Gibbs in the battle for the lead. Hamlin clears him, Hamlin leads into turn one.

Lap 362

Lap 362, Martin Truex Jr wiggles off turn four and brushes the wall. The caution is out. Truex Jr was in the free-pass position but he won’t get the free-pass as he was the cause of the caution.

Lap 373, Larson gets loose under Hamlin. He lifts and Hamlin holds the lead.

75 to go, Hamlin leads Larson by 2 seconds.

25 to go, Hamlin leads Larson by 3 seconds.
