Denny Hamlin will miss the NASCAR race in Mexico City

Joe Gibbs Racing will apply for a playoff waiver

For the past two race weekends, Denny Hamlin and Jordan Fish have been on baby watch. Ryan Truex has been on standby in the case that Hamlin would need to climb from the seat during the race.

On Thursday, the baby was born. The couple welcomes their first baby boy.

This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series is running their first points paying race in the country of Mexico. The on-track action begins today at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Travel issues cause NASCAR to adjust Mexico schedule

Now, Hamlin has announced that he’ll be missing this weekend’s race. Ryan Truex will be the driver of the No. 11 car.

In order to qualify for the playoffs, drivers are required to run every race. However, NASCAR does give medical waivers. Joe Gibbs Racing says they intend to apply for the waiver.

Denny Hamlin comments

“We are happy to announce the birth of our son,” Hamlin said.

“Everyone is doing well. My main priority is to be here at home for Jordan and our family over the next few days when she is able to go home and we transition to life as a family of five.”

“I appreciate everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing, our partners, and our fans for the support over the last few weeks and I look forward to being back at the track next weekend in Pocono.”

Hamlin hasn’t missed a NASCAR Cup Series race since 2014.
