Today, Daytona International Speedway is hosting the Daytona 500. It’s the biggest race of the season for the NASCAR Cup Series.
With 78 laps to go, Justin Allgaier was in the lead. But he got too far ahead. Denny Hamlin was closing fast with a huge shove.
Allgaier threw a late block on Hamlin in the tri-oval section of the track. Hamlin’s nose was already there. Hamlin was stuffed into the outside wall.
Both Hamlin and Allgaier bounced off the outside wall with the entire field behind them. In total 20 cars were collected in the crash.
Allgaier’s spotter stated over the radio, “Well, I thought I said outside. I don’t know.”
Crew chief responded, “You said it. He got so far out there.”
20 cars were collected in the crash. The record for the number of cars taken out in a single Daytona 500 crash is 23.
Involved in crash: Ross Chastain; Austin Cindric; Kyle Larson; Kyle Busch; Denny Hamlin; Ryan Blaney; Joey Logano; William Byron; Todd Gilliland; Riley Herbst; Zane Smith; Justin Allgaier; Cole Custer; John Hunter Nemechek; Erik Jones; Alex Bowman; Ty Gibbs; Corey Heim; Michael McDowell; Shane van Gisbergen
“This is an aggressive move by Denny Hamlin in a tight spot. But, he’s there,” Kevin Harvick stated.
Harvick added, “Justin, a little late on getting up there and leaving too much space.”
The race is still ongoing.
Justin Allgaier comments
“Unfortunately, I’m going to take 100% of the responsibility there,” Justin Allgaier told Fox Sports.
“I got to the top there and I watch the run coming with Denny. I thought he was going to push, I thought the lane was closed up just enough that he wouldn’t try to go up there.”
“When I realized he was going to go out there, it was just too late. I hate it for everybody that got caught up in it.”
“I’ll watch this video back, a lot and try to figure out what I could have done better.”
