Hurricane Patricia hit North America this week and the dissipating inland storms were the ingredients for the best F1 race of 2015. (See photos of Hurricane Patricia storms hitting the Circuit of the America’s). All weekend long the track had been covered by droplets of rain. However, race day was the day the storms settled and the changing weather conditions during the race bought on an track storm of racing action.

Turn 1, Lewis Hamilton gets a better start than pole sitter and teammate Nico Rosberg. Hamilton pulled along side and drove it in a bit deep pushing his car to the track limits on corner exit. Rosberg on the outside had nowhere to go but beyond the track limits. He returned to the track in 5th behind both Red Bull Racing cars and a Force India.

The rain stopped just before the race. Every team started the 56 lap race on the intermediate wet tires. However, the track would take nearly half the scheduled laps to dry enough for slick tires to become the preferred choice.

Several drivers attempted a change to slicks, well ahead of the suggested time limit change of tire manufacture Pirelli. However, those early adapters would go nowhere but backwards as the entered the weathered track surface.

The lead of the race changed multiple times. Even the struggling Infiniti Red Bull Racing team led a few laps early on. Daniel Ricciardo drove passed one Mercedes and then another to take the lead.

Lewis Hamilton and all drivers wore out their intermediate tires to the limit as they waited for the track to dry out enough for slicks. Drivers were running off track late in the wet tire run, on purpose, in search of wet areas to cool the tires. An attempt to preserver the wet tires for as long as possible.

10 laps to go, Rosberg is now your leader. However, shortly after a safety car restart he drives off track, all on his own. This gives the lead back to teammate Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg throws a possible win away and hands one over to teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton claims the win leading the 2015 USGP results sheet. The British driver simultaneously clinched the 2015 f1 drivers’ championship in his ‘2nd home’ grand prix in the United States.

Sebastian Vettel had an exciting drive from from a penalized starting position in the rear of the field. He pushed his Scuderia Ferrari to 3rd behind Rosberg. Finishing 2nd would have pushed the drivers championship to the following Grand Prix in Mexico.

Meanwhile, mid pack had the attention of most the crowd at Alexander Rossi. The lone American driver from California found himself in 11th with just a handful of laps to go. Just one position away from a points paying position with the struggling Manor F1 Team machine. However, he would slip up a position to 12th and come up just short. It was still an amazingly satisfying run for the F1 driver from the United States.
