Talladega Superspeedway race results from October 15, 2017 featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Today, NASCAR circles the BIG track. Talladega SuperSpeedway is a 2.666 mile restrictor plate oval. The Alabama 500 is the scene of the second race of the second round of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

It’s Dale Earnhardt Jr’s final start at Talladega Superspeedway and he’ll start it from the pole. The governor has declared today ‘Dale Earnhardt Jr Day’ officially. Alongside Jr, is his teammate Chase Elliott. An all Hendrick front row heads the first.

Stage 1

Green flag, Dale Earnhardt Jr gets a push from Joey Logano. Chase Elliott has zero help on the outside. Dale Jr to the lead in turn 1, he leads by 4 cars lengths out of turn 2. Joey Logano gets a run off turn 4, he pulls to the outside and beats Jr to the line, Logano leads lap 1.

Lap 13, five car break away at the front of the field. The Penske cars have stacked up 1-2 at the front, led by Joey Logano. Dale Earnhardt Jr runs 3rd. The 3rd lane has some momentum a few laps ago, that’s since dissipated.

Lap 14, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowksi, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Kurt Busch and more all hit pit road. All the Ford’s pit together, early. Dale Earnhardt Jr has collected the lead.

Lap 25, Danica Patrick is in trouble. She was at the tail end of the Ford draft following pit stops. She has lost touch with that pack, nobody behind, nobody ahead.

Lap 26, trouble as cars tried to reach pit road. Jamie McMurray was trying to get to to pit road from the 2nd lane. Erik Jones, Kyle Busch and others didn’t get the message. Kyle Busch missed him by inches, Erik Jones trailed Busch. With nowhere to go, he plowed into the back of McMurray and sent him up the tri-oval banking. Jeffrey Earnhardt smashed into McMurray as the #1 went sideways across the track.

Dale Earnhardt Jr made it to pit road, they were going to take 2 tires, a quick call changed it to a 4 tire stop. However, as the caution came out, pit road was instantly closed. Several cars were just feet from pit entrance. Dale Earnhardt Jr, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Paul Menard, Michael McDowell and Joey Gase will all be penalized for entering a closed pit. To the tail they go.

Green flag, Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski are back to the lead. It’s an all-Ford top five. 3 wide for 6th on back. Speedy dry haze lifts into the air as the field roars down the front straight.

6 to go in stage 1, Joey Logano still leads on the bottom. However, Jimmie Johnson is making progress in row 2. He’s there, Brad Keselowski throws a block. Jimmie Johnson gets into his bumper then bangs doors with Ryan Blaney. At the back, Paul Menard has a flat tire, he’s in the wall, caution.

Green, 1 lap to go. Brad Keselowski on the inside, Logano on the outside, they run side by side through turn 1. Door to door at the line, Brad Keselowski beats him to the line and wins stage 1 at Talladega Superspeedway!

Stage 1 Results: 1. Brad Keselowski; 2. Joey Logano; 3. Ryan Blaney; 4. Ricky Stenhouse Jr; 5. Jimmie Johnson; 6. Clint Bowyer; 7. Michael McDowell; 8. Kurt Busch; 9. Trevor Bayne; 10. Kasey Kahne;

Stage 2

Most of the field hits pit road. Several cars pitted during the caution at the tail end of stage 1. Hamlin took two tires, he gains 9 positions on pit road. Joey Logano leads the four tire stoppers to the line. Kasey Kahne pitted on lap 30, he leads the field to green.

Green, Matt Kenseth takes the lead on the inside of turn 1. Kasey Kahne slots into 2nd. Ricky Stenhouse Jr scraps the wall at the back. Denny Hamlin makes it 4 wide on the outside! He created that line on his own, several followed. Hamlin swings around everyone, then dives to the bottom. New leader at Talladega, Denny Hamlin.

Lap 67, 1/2 the field hits pit road. It was designed to be the Ford pit stop but many Chevy’s crashed the party. Another wave of cars hit the pits in the following lap. Jimmie Johnson slowed from row 2, Ty Dillon didn’t get the message. He bumped Johnson as he slowed for his pit stop. That shoved Johnson into Danica Patrick. No caution, no spin, Johnson has heavy right rear damage.

Lap 81, Denny Hamlin hits pit road. Caution. Debris is on track.

Green flap, Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Kurt Busch lead the field to green. Side by side all the way through turns 1-2. Stenhouse Jr takes the position at the entry of turn 3. However, that might have been a planned attack from Kurt Busch. He backed up, got a push and has a run off turn 4. New leader, Kurt Busch.

18 to go in stage 2, Ryan Blaney to the lead, he side drafted Kurt Busch on the inside line. Clint Bowyer slots in 2nd.

1 to go, Ryan Blaney still controls the head of the field. He’s blocking the outside line, led by Brad Keselowski. The #2 car backs up at the entry to turn 3. He’s going to try to get a run to the line. Not enough, Ryan Blaney wins stage 2 at Talladega.

Stage 2 Results: 1. Ryan Blaney; 2. Brad Keselowski; 3. Clint Bowyer; 4. Chase Elliott; 5. Kurt Busch; 6. Austin Dillon; 7. Jimmie Johnson; 8. Kevin Harvick; 9. Kyle Busch; 10. Denny Hamlin;

Stage 3

The whole field hits pit lane, except Brendan Gaughan. 2 tires for Austin Dillon and Denny Hamlin, they exit in 1st and 2nd. Ryan Blaney heads of pit road in 3rd, the first of the cars that took 4 tires.

Green, Brendan Gaughan sslects the inside line he takes the lead early. Denny Hamlin, seeps by on the outside with help from Ryan Blaney. Hamlin is attempting to block both lanes. Ryan Blaney has a run, he looks high, Denny Hamlin pulls up to block through the tri-oval. Ryan Blaney dives to the bottom. New leader, Ryan Blaney.

Lap 124, Chase Elliott side drafts Ryan Blaney, chasing him down the banking, slight contact. Elliott has a run from lane 4 at the flagstand. He drove up the banking, caught the front bumper of Martin Truex Jr. With a push, Elliott to the lead in turn 1. He turns to the yellow line and takes command of the inside line.

Dale Earnhardt Jr is slicing his way back to the front. He was 10th laps ago. He now runs 2nd. That lap, he was the fastest car on track.

Lap 139, eight car break-away at the front. Chase Elliott leads the pack. The line is glued to the outside wall. Lane 4, all the way around the track. A second train has formed well behind them, they tour the bottom. Chase Elliott reacts to that, he moves to the bottom and the lead pack follows him down there. The lines connect, one long train around the bottom.

45 to go, Blaney, Keselowski, Stenhouse, Harvick and more hit pit road. It’s the Ford pit stop. The next lap, most of the remaining cars hit pit lane. The cycle is complete in two laps. Kyle Busch leads but Joey Logano has a run on the outside, he takes the lead.

Lap 152, caution. Trevor Bayne is slow on track. He has a flat right front after contact mid-pack. Kasey Kahne and Kurt Busch ran out of room, Kurt Busch made a hard left hand turn to avoid the wall and door slammed Bayne. Some cars hit pit road.

Green. Caution! Trouble at the back in turn 1. Cole Whitt was switching lanes, coming to the middle. Michael McDowell was coming from the bottom to the middle. They accidentally went for the same space, at the same time. Multiple cars involved, heavy damage for Clint Bowyer.

Green, Joey Logano takes command at the front. 3 wide for 5th on back.

24 to go, Joey Gase is in the wall. Caution, it’s the 8th yellow of the day. DJ Kennington pinched the exit of turn 2. He hooked the right rear of Gase, into the wall he went.

Green, Joey Logano has a big push from Kyle Larson on the outside. Larson lagged back on the restart. Joey Logano drops down to the inside line in turn 1, back to the front.

Daniel Suarez has a run on the outside lane. Logano tries to block too late. New leader, Daniel Suarez.

Big crash! It’s the big one. Martin truex Jr tried to make it 4 wide going into turn 3. David Ragan didn’t expect it or he tried to block it. Either way, he slid across the nose of Truex in front of the field. Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr, Jimmie Johnson, Ricky Stenhouse and more involved. Red flag.

Dale Earnhardt Jr was involved as well. Minimal damage compared to the others. He slid sideways, on the gas, across the infield grass. Splitter is still intact.

“Bad judgement, I should have been more patient,” Martin Truex Jr takes the blame for the incident.

Several cars hit pit road.

Green, Joey Logano and Daniel Suarez are side by side for the lead in turn 1. Chase Elliott has a run from lane 4 down the back. He swings quickly to the bottom at the entry to turn 3. He takes the lead! That was a hell of a pass.

Big crash! Ryan Blaney looked to the outside, 3 wide of Joey Logano. They ran out of room, Logano took a left turn into Trevor Bayne. Bayne goes up the banking in front of the field. Red flag #2.

It’s a replay of the last crash. Kevin Harvick is involved again, this time he retires. The field thins further. Less than 20 cars remain

Green, Daniel Suarez to the lead. Kyle Larson forces his way through on the inside line, inches between them. Larson to the lead. Suarez flights back on the outside.

Big crash! Chase Elliott looked to the middle, making it 3 wide for the lead. The hole was there. Unfortunately, Kyle Larson moved up a little, at the same time Suarez came down from the top. The hole closed quickly an Suarez slid across the nose of Elliott. Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and Daniel Suarez are all destroyed. Red flag #3.

The field thins again. But, the crowd erupts because Dale Earnhardt Jr made it through the crash, once again.

Green flag, about 10 cars remain. 3 laps to go. Dale Earnhardt Jr locks bumpers with Brad Keselowski. On the outside, Denny Hamlin gives a push to Ryan Newman, they both go to the front. Hamlin dives to the bottom. Newman slips back around.

1 to go, Ryan Newman leads Brad Keselowski by 3 car lengths. Keselowski looks to the outside in turn 3. He completes the pass. Brad Keselowski wins at Talladega Superspeedway!
