2018 Michigan International Speedway: Starting Lineup – NASCAR Cup Series

NASCAR Cup Series qualifying results from Michigan International Speedway on August 10th, 2018

This weekend, NASCAR goes high-speed racing at Michigan International Speedway. The 2-mile oval is smooth as glass and the speeds run over a 200mph average. They run about 210mph heading into the corner with the slowest portion clocked at about 190mph.

Round 1

Its a 15 minute session in round 1. The top 24 cars will advance into round two.

Kurt Busch leads early in round 1 of qualifying.

It’s short lived. Denny Hamlin jumps to the top of the board. These two drivers traded real estate at the top of the time sheets in the opening round of practice earlier.

8 minutes into round 1, trouble for Daniel Suarez. The #19 has slammed the outside wall. The car bobbled in the middle of the corner. He chased it up the hill then skated through the marbles until he collected the wall. Suarez did not get a lap in.

Round 2

It’s a 10 minute session in round 2 at MIS. The top 12 cars will advance to the final round.

4 minutes in, every Joe Gibbs Racing car including Martin Truex Jr sit at the top of the board. 12 cars have qualified. 5 minutes in, Kevin Harvick jumps to 2nd and breaks up the JGR domination.

Denny Hamlin won the first round. Now, he’s won the 2nd round as well.

Round 3

It’s a brief 5 minute session in the final round of knockout qualifying at Michigan International Speedway. The top twelve from round two will run for the pole.

It’s Joe Gibbs Racing vs Stewart-Haas Racing, much as it’s been all year. Together, they control 7 of the twelve cars that advanced to the final round.

2 minutes in, Hamlin returns to the top of the board. He’s looking to sweep qualifying.

Kevin Harvick is saving his run for the very last minute. Harvick to 3rd!

Denny Hamlin will start from the pole at Michigan International Speedway!

Tomorrow, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will return to the track. Two rounds of practice are on the schedule. The Consumers Energy 400 will air on Sunday at 2:30. The race is a 200-mile event.
