NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson ran the Boston Marathon: Here’s how he did

2019 Boston Marathon stats for Jimmie Johnson

7-time NASCAR champion driver Jimmie Johnson set after new goals for 2019. Just ahead of an off-week for his day-job, he elected to run 26.2, for fun.

43-year-old Jimmie Johnson has been training for months. That of course is not unusual for an athlete.

In this case though, the NASCAR driver competed in the Marathon just two days after running the stock car race at Richmond Raceway on Saturday night. The Boston Marathon took place on Monday, April 20th, 2019.

The Boston Marathon race is an endurance event on foot over the course of 26.2 miles of pavement. It begins in Hopkinton and ends on Boylston Street.

Step by step, NASCAR driver Johnson completed the whole thing.

Approximately 32,500 runners entered the event. Johnson finished the race 4,183 overall with a time of 3:09:07. Lawrence Cherono (02:07:57) was the overall race winner by just 2 seconds over Lelisa Desisa (02:07:59).

Not bad at all for a first attempt.

“I tired to hold a sub 3 but knew at half way I was in trouble. I pulled it back and worried about finishing at that point,” Johnson said of his race.

“Out on the course, just seeing everyone rooting me on — The signs that were up. It was just the most incredible experience. I thank you all for your support. My legs are junk. I can barely even walk right now but it was worth every bit of it,” Jimmie Johnson stated shortly after he crossed the finish line.

“I’m finding the stairs quite challenging today, other than that I’m on cloud 9,” he said the day after the event.

With the time set, Johnson has officially qualified for next year’s running of the Boston Marathon.
