Martin Truex Jr comments on the spin and win at Richmond Raceway

The race leader was taken out by a lap car; Truex’s first response: “What the hell?”

Those leaders are in the way of the faster lap cars

Martin Truex Jr started 8th on Saturday night at Richmond Raceway. It didn’t take long for him to get to the front of the field.

Truex drove to the win in stage one. He finished 2nd in stage two.

In stage three, Truex was back in the lead and cruising out front. Green flag pit stops were underway.

Truex was out there on old tires. Ricky Stenhouse Jr had already pitted and was faster than the leader.

In an attempt to un-lap himself, Stenhouse Jr looked to the inside of the race leader. Truex left the bottom lane open.

However, as Stenhouse drove it deep to the bottom, he locked up the front wheels. As that happened, the front end stopped turning.

Stenhouse slid up the track and into the left rear of the race leader. A lap car took out the leader. Truex looped it in turn four.

He was able to keep it rolling, falling to 3rd. Truex then rebounded, drove back to the race lead and went on to lead the race.

Martin Truex Jr on the spin and win

Martin Truex Jr explained his reaction to that after the race, “The first thing was what the hell?”

“Then, just trying to keep it out of the wall. Trying to spin it out and get going again.”

“Once I realized I wasn’t going to hit anything. Just hope nobody hits me in the smoke cause there was a lot of smoke.”

“Just try to get it going and lose as little time as possible. Luckily, we were able to come out of that deal 3rd. We came into the pits 3rd and left the pits 3rd.”

“We had a big lead at that point in time. That’s really what was helpful.”

“It’s definitely not the way you draw them up and plan them. But, it added some drama to the race, that’s for sure,” Martin Truex Jr concluded.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr on taking out the leader

“First off, sorry to Martin Truex Jr and his fans. Didn’t anticipate locking the RF up and getting into him,” Stenhouse Jr commented.

“Glad he was able to come back & still win. It killed our great run we had going inside the top 10. The team brought a great Fastenal Racing Mustang. Hate i messed it up.”
