NASCAR has new rules and stage lengths for the YellaWood 500
There has been several rules changes since the last time the NASCAR Cup Series raced at Talladega Superspeedway. Here’s an update of the changes.
– Engine horsepower has been lowered from 510 HP to 465 HP.
– The rear spoiler has been reduced from 4″ to 3.5″.
The combination of less power and less drag is designed with the idea of creating passing opportunities. When drivers pull out of line to catch a run, they should lose less speed with a drag reduction.
Note: NASCAR has still requested all teams to bring a 4″ spoiler to the track as well.
Talladega stage lengths changed
Additionally, NASCAR has adjusted the length of the stages. Previous stage lengths were 60-120-188. This weekend, those have been changed to 98-143-188.
NASCAR is looking to reduce the fuel saving strategies. In recent superspeedway races, teams have spent most of the early stages just saving fuel.
The final two stages and certainly the last one should be wide open with no fuel saving in mind.
