Ricky Thornton Jr is set to run for rookie of the year
In 2020, Ricky Thornton Jr ran a mix of dirt modified and dirt late model events. 38 trophies were collected in 2020 alone. He ended the season with six consecutive modified wins.
The 30 year old picked up three late model wins this season. None bigger than October 3, when Thornton Jr grabbed a $20,000 check in the Pittsburgher 100 at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.
For 2021, Ricky Thornton Jr is setting sights on the national tour.
The team stated, “It’s official! We are going Lucas Oil Late Model racing full time this season thanks to Todd and Vickie Burns with SSI Motorsports. Ricky will be competing for the 2021 Rookie of the Year title in addition to the championship. We will race the modified when the schedule allows.”
Thornton will pilot the SSI Motorsports No 20 machine.
“Since I was a little kid my goal has always been to race Late Models,” Ricky Thornton Jr said via a team release.
He added, “Now, to be able to do it with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, it just makes it that much better. Huge thanks to Todd and Vickie Burns, and everyone at SSI Motorsports for giving me this opportunity.”
The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series is arguably the most competitive dirt late model tour in the country.
The 2021 season is set to begin on January 22-23 at Golden Isles Speedway near Brunswick, Ga. East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL will then hold six straight nights of action from January 25-30. Two more races at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL are scheduled for February 1-2. Speedweeks conclude at All-Tech Raceway in Lake City, FL on February 4-6.
