The docuseries has been in development for awhile. It was officially announced in April 2021.
It follows the NASCAR driver as he signed with 23XI Racing, in their debut season. The new team is owned by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan. The year was highlighted by the win at Talladega Superspeedway.
6 episodes will be released. Each episode is 45 minutes in length.
The series will highlight the roller coaster of emotions in the last several seasons. That includes the drama of 2020. In 2020, Wallace spoke out, encouraging NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag, which was embedded into the roots of the sport.
“To be a black man, o be in that NASCAR space and to wear a shirt that says, ‘I can’t breathe.’ I have a responsibility. It’s automatic that I have a responsibility,” Wallace stated in the series trailer.
Shortly after NASCAR banned the flag, a noose was discovered in Bubba Wallace’s garage stall. The FBI was called to investigate. Following the investigation, it was determined that the noose had been there since 2019, the investigation concluded as it wasn’t a hate crime.
The special follows the driver as he confronts controversy in the middle of a high intensity season.
Bubba Wallace comments
The series is officially titled ‘RACE: Bubba Wallace’.
“This is unlike any project I’ve ever participated in; it’s a raw, emotional and completely transparent account of the events that took place throughout the 2020 and 2021 NASCAR seasons,” Wallace stated.
“With me, what you see is what you get. You’ll witness the peaks and valleys of the sport and see how one’s actions off of the race track are just as important as the ones on it.
“One of the most compelling pieces of the series is the additional insight the viewers will gain by hearing from my peers, family and some of my partners that played a role in this monumental journey. Join me as we break down barriers, confront controversy, and welcome a new fan base to the sport of NASCAR.”
The 2022 NASCAR season opens on Feb. 6 as the field takes to the track for the Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. That will be followed by the famed Daytona 500.
The special will air two days after the Daytona 500. Wallace has a best finish of 2nd in the ‘Great American Race’ at Daytona.
