NASCAR crew chief found guilty of assault

The incident took place at Talladega Superspeedway

On December 21st, 2021, a warrant for arrest was issued to Carlos Eduardo Troconi Ortiz. He was charged with second degree assault.

The charges were brought following an altercation at a NASCAR race on October 2nd, 2021. 43-year-old Troconi Ortiz assaulted spotter Clayton Hughes.

The incident took place at a campground off Speedway Boulevard. Eddie Triconis approached Hughes from behind, struck him in the back of the head then kicked him several times.

In March 2022, Carlos Eduardo Troconi Ortiz was suspended by NASCAR following the altercation.

Hughes suffered what looks to be permanent injuries. From the trial, Hughes struggles with walking, lifting and is now longer capable of physical intimacy.

Troconi-Ortiz was serving as a crew chief in the NASCAR Truck Series at the time. The altercation doesn’t appear to have anything to do with any on-track incidents.

Troconi-Ortiz is married but separated from driver Jennifer Jo Cobb. They married in 2015 but have long been separated.

At the time of the altercation, Hughes was working as the spotter for Cobb. It’s speculated that the two were dating.

Triconis faces one year and one day or up to 10 years in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled by Circuit Judge Will Hollingsworth for Feb. 27 at 9 a.m.
