Toyota needs help on Sundays
NASCAR is home to just three manufacturers of Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota. Toyota is the least represented make with just 6 cars in the 40 car field.
As of now, 23XI Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing are the extent of the Toyota backed teams. And, that was part of the strategy when it comes to the old NASCAR model.
“We’ve got some good irons in the fire now,” David Wilson told NBC Sports.
“What was once a very effective strategy to amass our resources across fewer cars, with the marginalization of the areas that we have to play in and the flattening out of the playing field, we definitely need some more help.”
In 2022, NASCAR leveled the playing field via the Next Gen car. The cars and now spec, identical from team to team. Advantages are now found in the way the cars are put together as well as the setup on the machine.
To find those advantages, it helps to have a stable of cars attempting different things. With just 6 cars, Toyota has struggled.
Wilson explained, “nine to 10 cars is probably our sweet spot with this new car.”
Joe Gibbs Racing collected 6 wins in 2022. That’s the lowest number of wins for the team since 2014.
Wilson has previously stated that there’s interest from high profile people to join the sport as a new owner. They were vague in that statement.
