With 22 to go, Dean Thompson got loose and tagged the wall off turn four. He spun across the track and the caution was thrown.

However, several drivers came into the scene with nowhere to go. Matt Mills drove into the passenger side door of Thompson’s machine.

Trey Hutchens and Armani Williams were also collected. As Thompson’s truck was thrown back across the track from the original impact, he was then hit in the driver’s side door as well.

NASCAR swapped the yellow flag for the red flag. Several ambulances and safety crews were quickly deployed.

21-year-old Thompson climbed from his machine under his own power. As soon as he did, he dropped to the ground next to his truck.

The AMR safety team elected to place Thompson on a stretcher. He was then loaded into the ambulance.

Trey Hutchens and Matt Mills were checked and released from the infield care center.

Thompson initially transported to the infield care center. At the conclusion of the race, NASCAR notified the media that the driver was awake and alert but he was still being evaluated.

Thompson was later transported from the infield care center to a local hospital.

Update: Dean Thompson comments

On Saturday night, Dean Thompson re-activated his twitter account:

“Hey y’all, I actually deleted Twitter to do a detox for about a month but I’m back lol. Just to update y’all I’m doing good, just getting some scans done then I’m gonna go have a beer when I get home!”

“He added, “Also thank you to everyone for all the love and support. Especially the infield care center nurses and staff. Truly blessed to be able to do what I do.”

The driver is in his third year of NASCAR Truck Series competition. He had a best finish of 11th which he claimed last season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
