At Talladega Superspeedway, Kyle Larson spun in front of the field. Ryan Preece stayed in the gas, in an attempt to race past the crash.

Instead, Preece drove into the right side door of the No. 5 car while still in the throttle.

Both cars were destroyed. However, the damage to the No. 5 car brought alarms. The door cage was pushed inward, inside the cockpit, leaving a massive hole in the door.

Kyle Larson commented after the crash

“Lucky, very lucky,” Kyle Larson stated.

“Obviously, it’s unsettling when you see things that could have easily gotten me, in the car. Whether it be bars that had completely broke off and could have shanked me. Or, what if I had a second impact?”

“I’m not knocking NASCAR at all. They’ve worked really hard with this car to make it safer.”

“I’m thankful they took my car and Preece’s car to dive in deeper to it to see how they could make it even safer yet. There’s no other form of racing that takes safety more seriously. But, that doesn’t mean our sport is safe.”

“It was in my cockpit,” Larson stated of Preece’s car.

“Thankfully, I couldn’t see it in the car. It hurt just like all of them do.”

“Everybody knows it was not what they wanted to see. I’m sure there will be a change going forward.”

Larson added, “I felt fine. I don’t know how Preece felt. But, mine, with the side impact, I’m so tight in the car that I didn’t have anywhere to go.”

NASCAR Rule Change

– “Right-side door bar gussets: Six right side bar gussets may be added in the outlined locations (see photo). The gussets will be provided to teams at no charge and aim to strengthen a welded joint to limit intrusion.”

– “The front clip V-brace must be removed from the assembly, which will reduce the stiffness of the front clip.”

NASCAR is running crash tests on Wednesday and Thursday in Ohio. Following the tests, additional changes could be made.
