Heavy snow expected during the NASCAR season opener

The 2026 NASCAR season is set to begin this weekend in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Bowman Gray Stadium will host The Clash for the NASCAR Cup Series.
NASCAR inspection is currently underway. Inspection is taking place indoors, miles from the 0.25-mile speedway.
Track officials have cleared the track of snow. However, more snow is likely on the way.
A winter storm alert has been issued. 5-8 inches is expected between Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. Additionally, wind gusts of 25mph to 35mph could occur.

“Winter storm watch in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon,” the alert opened.
“WHAT…Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches possible. Locally significant snowfall totals will also be possible. Wind gusts of 25 to 35mph.”
“WHERE…All of Central North Carolina.”
“WHEN…From Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon.”
“IMPACTS…The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs May down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Travel may become dangerous or even impossible with widespread closures and disruptions to infrastructure possible.”
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
“Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation.”
“Consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, driver with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.”
NASCAR says they are monitoring the weather
Earlier this week, NASCAR issued a statement regarding the weather.
“We’re monitoring one more snow storm arriving Friday evening / Saturday. Our goal is to host the Clash at Bowman Gray but we’ll communicate schedule changes as we learn more.”
