Dover Motor Speedway is a 1-mile concrete oval in Dover, Delaware. Back in May, the track hosted the All-Star Race for the NASCAR Cup Series.
A tornado in this area is an extremely rare case.
But Thursday night, the area was struck by a large and extremely dangerous tornado. The city has seen major structural damage. Power grids have suffered major damage due to widespread downed power lines.
As of now, an EF rating has not yet been determined.
The city of Dover has declared a state of emergency after the area suffered extensive damage. Dover police have urged residents to minimize travel.
The NASCAR track sits just 2 miles from the city center. The facility has provided an update…
Dover Motor Speedway update
“𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 | At this time, there appears to be no major damage at Dover Motor Speedway following reports of a nearby tornado,” the track opened in a statement on Thursday night.
“We’re hopeful that everyone in our community is safe and that no one was injured. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and plan to conduct a more thorough survey of the facility in the coming days.”
The track recently announced their 2027 NASCAR date. On May 15th, 2027, the track will host the NASCAR Cup Series for a regular points-paying event as the All-Star Race moves to North Wilkesboro.
