Watch the video and listen to the team radio ahead of the NASCAR crash at New Hampshire Motor Speedway
Late in the race, Michael McDowell and Riley Herbst were in a battle for position. McDowell run him wide and got into his door but they remained side-by-side off turn two.
At that point, Herbst was told over his team radio, “Don’t get bullied here. Stand up for yourself.”
Heading into turn three, the two drivers made more contact. According to the team radio, McDowell thought Herbst came down on him on the straight-away leading into the corner.
The video confirms that Herbst did take an early entry into the corner.
McDowell then climbed over the left rear of Herbst into turn three. Herbst was sent backwards and hard into the wall.
As Herbst bounced off the wall, Connor Zilisch locked up his brakes and slid into the scene. He slammed into the nose of Herbst as he sat parked on the track.

Herbst team radio stated, “Trying to run you up the hill. Still you and him, even.”
“Gonna be tight. Two-by-two behind you.”
“Don’t get bullied here. Stand up for yourself.”
Seconds later, Herbst was turned by McDowell.
“Hold the brake. We’re getting wrecked hard.”
“Talk to me if you’re OK here.”
The driver went several seconds without a response.
The crew added, “Jesus Christ. Are you OK? Talk to me here.”
Herbst finally came on the radio with the wind knocked out of him, “Yeah. I’m alright”

McDowell stated after the incident, “That wasn’t a smart move on his part.”
The driver elaborated, “He tried to door me down the straight away. That was a bad idea.”
