Martin truex Jr explains the goals and steps of a Goodyear Tire test

Martin Truex Jr explains the plans for the NASCAR tire test at Texas Motor Speedway

Yesterday and today, the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series machines took to the track for the first time. But, it’s not necessarily a test for the teams.

The Goodyear Tire tests are more a test for the tire company as well as the sanctioning body. It allows them to test different compounds well ahead of the actual race date.

What do you learn from a tire test?

“It’s a Goodyear tire test. So, trying to figure out what tire we need to bring back here in the Spring. To you know, be able to put on the best show possible.”

“I really felt like, both races here last year, for a repave, were pretty good. Hopefully, we can find a tire that’ll maybe get the second groove comin’ in a little earlier. Especially, in turns 1-2.”

“So far, so good. It’s been going well.”

How do you find the right tire compound?

“It’s not really about what each of us likes more than the other. It’s more about finding some sort of comfort, for everybody.”

“Finding something that can put better racing on. That’s really what we try to focus on with this.”

“You don’t want to pick the tire that’s just, the fastest or just feels the best. You want to have something that’s somewhat consistent. We also looking for something that we can move around on the track a little bit more than normal. And, something that has a little bit more fall off in speed as the run goes on.”

“Those are the things I’m looking for. We just try to relay the information to Goodyear. They ultimately pick what they think the best one is.”

Martin Truex Jr heads into the new NASCAR season as the defending champion.
