Bill Elliott returns to NASCAR: Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin react (Video)

Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin comment on the news that 62 year old Bill Elliott will return to NASCAR

Awesome Bill from Dawsonville broke the internet last night. He’s returning to the drivers seat!

It was announced yesterday, in the middle of NASCAR Cup Series qualifying at Watkins Glen International. GMS Racing sent out the release that Bill Elliott is scheduled return to NASCAR.

Elliott’s last NASCAR race came in 2012. He made a start and park run for Turner Motorsports at Daytona International Speedway that year.

In 2011, he started the Daytona 500 and finished 12th. In that same year, Elliott started the other restrictor plate race at Talladega and raced it to a 26th place finish.

However, he hasn’t raced a NASCAR race on a road course in anything since 2007. Elliott finished 19th at Sonoma Raceway for Wood Brothers Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series.

He’s never raced at Road America, ever. Until now, Bill Elliott has announced that he will run for GMS Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at the young age of 62.

The pole sitter and outside pole sitter for Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen International were informed of this news in the media center after their qualifying runs.

“Wow,” Denny Hamlin comments on the news after taking the pole at Watkins Glen International.

Kyle Busch has a question: “How old is he?”

Busch is informed that Elliott is 62.

“I mean, there’s been others older,” Busch continues. “That’s cool. Good for him. He’s never run there right? So, that will be a unique experience.”

“Him and Ray Evernham have been doing a bunch of that road racing stuff lately with that Ghost car that Ray had and also bringing out some old school Cup cars and stuff.”

“So, obviously, that was a prelude to what he had cooked up his sleeve. Now, we all know.”

Denny Hamlin: “That’s awesome.”

Kyle Busch interrupts: “Awesome Bill man!”

“Yeah! He was my favorite driver growing up. It will be cool to watch him,” Hamlin concludes.

Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin weren’t the only members of the NASCAR community to comment on the news.

Dale Jr: I can’t believe Bill Elliott is going to run a NASCAR Xfinity race. Like Bill just been waiting on someone to ask him.”

Elliott hasn’t run a NASCAR Busch Series race since 2005, he finished 19th. He attempted to start a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2007 but he failed to qualify for the event that day.

Bill Elliott will return! He’s scheduled to drive a 2018 race winning car. He’ll pilot the #23 for GMS Racing at Road America August 25th. Elliott will also run a TransAm car at Mid-Ohio August 9-11.
