“We all know what we’re doing. We have a young knucklehead driver that likes stirring the pot.”
Carson Hocevar has built a reputation in the NASCAR Cup Series. The polorizing driver has brought excitment back to the sport and he’s rightly earned the name “Hurricane Hocevar” to go with it.
Spinning drivers out for a position outside the top 10, calling himself a Joe Gibbs Racing driver and a fight on the pit lane are just some of those headlines from the recent weeks alone. But, he’ll also be the only driver to walk into the grandstands after the race and sign autographs, regardless of where he finished that day.
While he’s created a fan base and currently leads in merchandise sales, he’s simultaneously lost the respect from the garage area. And, Denny Hamlin didn’t give Hocevar the attention he wanted, instead he called out Spire Motorsports noting they had, “No adults in the room.”
Michael McDowell drives the No. 71 for Spire Motorsports. He’s the teammate to Carson Hocevar. And, things could be a bit different behind the scenes than we think.

Michael McDowell reacts to the “No adults in the room” comment about his team
“I stayed off social media, Michael McDowell told Speed Freaks.
“There are a lot of adults at Spire. I understand the comment. Because not everything’s public.”
“Nobody knows the conversations that I’m having with Carson behind closed doors. That’s how I’m wired anyway, I wouldn’t want everybody to know.”
Carson Hocevar responds after the comments from Denny Hamlin
“We’re living in a very public sport. When there’s a lot of private matters. That’s just part of what we all signed up to do.”
“But, I’m not offended by it either. We all know what we’re doing. We have a young knucklehead driver that likes stirring the pot.”
McDowell added, “But, for the rest of us, we’re working really hard on trying to make sure that our race cars are going fast.”
