NASCAR COT car for sale: Kyle Busch won with this car at Bristol then said “They suck”

Kyle Busch won the first Car of Tomorrow race at Bristol Motor Speedway where he famously stated from victory lane, “They suck.”

The Car of Tomorrow made it’s debut at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2007. 160,000 fans packed into the Bristol, Tennessee race track that day, offering the 50th consecutive sellout for the beloved race track.

The new car was in development for 5 years leading up to it’s debut, it fixed many lingering safety issues. The project began following several tragic deaths of NASCAR drivers, most notably, Dale Earnhardt.

The big, safe and bulky dump trucks didn’t that handle great. In the years that followed, we learned that teams were wedging up the cars near 50% with almost no weight on the left front, just to get them to turn.

This new car much bigger. The drivers seat was moved forward several inches, while the cage was also moved backwards. Larger crumble zones were put in place to absorb impacts. Foam was installed on both sides of the car. All around, it was safer.

However, a large rear wing was installed and the front splitter made it’s debut. It instantly became the most-hated NASCAR chassis of the modern era.

Kyle Busch wins first COT race

It was so hated, even the first race winning driver wasn’t a fan. Kyle Busch won that opening race in a battle with Jeff Burton in front of 160,000 Bristol fans.

“I said that I wanted to go out and win this race so I could tell everybody how terrible this thing is to drive,” Kyle Busch said after the race.

Kyle Busch started the race in 20th. With just 70 laps remaining in the race, Busch was up to 2nd, behind Denny Hamlin.

With 15 laps to go, Jimmie Johnson blew a tire right in front of the race leaders. As the field scrambled to get around Johnson, Busch told the lead away from Hamlin.

A caution with 3 laps to go lined up cars with fresher tires behind race leader Kyle Busch. However, he was able to hold off the charge from Jeff Burton and others to take the race win.

The win marked NASCAR Cup Series win #600 for Chevrolet. It was also the first of many Bristol wins for Kyle Busch.

While standing in victory lane, he famously added, “I still not a very big fan of these things. I can’t stand to drive them. They suck.”
