On Sunday, NASCAR returned to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was the opening race in round two of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Watch the Joey Gase crash video below.

At the front, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson battled for the lead. At the back of the field, 28-year-old Joey Gase was rolling the bottom lane and feeling out a possible issue.

Just ahead of the crash, Joey Gase Racing PR tweeted, “Joey radios he’s bouncing really bad around the track, but especially in turn 4. He says it feels like something is broke Pitting now to see what’s wrong.”

On lap 92 of 267, the mechanical issue was confirmed. The left rear wheel broke off the machine.

Immediately, Gase’s machine was sent into a spin. He backed up the banking at a high rate of speed and with limited ability to slow the car down due to a loss of wheels.

Gase slammed the outside wall, rear first. The impact lifted Gase’s machine off the ground. He then slid back down the banking and made hard contact with the inside wall as well in a second impact.

After the incident, Gase appeared dazed. Standard procedure is for NASCAR drivers to let the window net down to let safety workers know if they’re ok.

In this case, Gase left the window net up. Safety officials approached the car and took the window net down before helping Gase from the machine.

During the race, Rick Ware Racing stated, “Joey Gase is being transferred to the local hospital for further evaluation. We will update as information becomes available.”

Gase has since been released. Howeber, he’s expected to be further evaluated upon returning to North Carolina.

“The medical staff at the track decided to take the precautionary measures to have Joey further evaluated at the hospital. He has been released from the hospital and will be further evaluated in Charlotte.”
