Bloomquist also discussed the sad news of East Bay Raceway Park closing in the coming years
The 2022 racing season is well underway. But, one superstar has been absent for the entry lists so far this year, across all series of competition.
Scott Bloomquist has one of the most impressive resumes in the history of dirt late model racing. However, the 58-year-old racing driver has been battling several injuries and subsequent surgeries in recent years.
Bloomquist’s most recent surgery was for carpel tunnel in his elbow and wrist. That surgery has caused him to miss Florida Speedweeks, at least from the driver’s seat.
However, the surgery went well and he’s on the way to recovery. Bloomquist visited East Bay Raceway Park for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. He was invited into the booth were he detailed his recovery…
Scott Bloomquist talks surgeries and injuries
“Carpal tunnel I had it in my elbow and wrist. It seems to be a pretty quick recovery for that,” Scott Bloomquist stated during the MAVTV broadcast at East Bay Raceway Park.
“I was going to do the other arm, right after. I think we’re going to put that off until next fall.”
Another injury is related to his shoulder. That’s been ongoing for years.
“Rotator cuffs, I just had a steroid shot in it. So, it’s feeling awful good right now.”
A few years ago, Bloomquist was in an accident on a motorcycle. As he fell, he injured both his leg and hip.
“The hip is great. It’s doing well. Toward the end of last year, the way we padded the seat up, it kept the weight off my replacement hip and pushed it to the other one. It made a big difference in the leg not getting numb while I raced.”
Bloomquist plans to race in 2022
“Just really focusing on the races that are $20,000 and up,” Bloomquist said of his upcoming schedule.
“Plan on running with all the series’, as much as possible. We’ll be at Bristol in March, then we’re going to go from there.”
The story of East Bay Raceway Park is likely coming to a close. The current track owner has an agreement with the mine next door to sell the track in 2024. That means just two more Florida Speedweeks and the book is closed.
“It’s such a piece of history,” Bloomquist said of East Bay Raceway Park.
“It goes so far back. It’s always been just a tough place to win. They always get so many cars and the racing is so intense.”
“It’s going to be missed. I hope maybe something changes.”
