Ty Gibbs vs John Hunter Nemechek at Richmond Raceway (Video)

“I mean, he didn’t even try and make the corner there”

On Saturday afternoon, the NASCAR Xfinity Series rolled into Richmond Raceway. The finish at the 0.75-mile short track went down to the wire between teammates.

Ty Gibbs and John Hunter Nemechek were the cars to beat all day. The Joe Gibbs Racing teammates were in a battle for the win.

With just 37 to go, Gibbs was in control of the field. However, as he caught lap traffic, Nemechek closed. Nemechek dove to his inside, they rubbed doors and Nemechek took over the lead.

Just a few laps later, Gibbs got into his rear bumper as they raced through lap traffic. Gibbs returned to the lead as Nemechek got loose.

With 5 laps to go, Nemechek closed right back to the bumper of Ty Gibbs. They ran side by side for 2 laps, Nemechek finally cleared him on the inside. But, it was far from over.

With 3 to go, Gibbs leaned on the rear bumper of Nemechek in turn two. That wasn’t enough as Nemechek held the lead.

With 2 to go, Gibbs drove it deep to the bottom. He pulled near even but got loose and Nemechek held the lead once more.

On the final lap, Gibbs threw the gloves out the window. Gibbs drove it deep into turn one and shoved Nemechek off the bottom lane. They ran side by side off turn two. Heading into turn three, Gibbs drove it so deep that he completely missed the corner. Gibbs went up the banking forcing Nemechek well off line.

Ty Gibbs grabbed the win and they’ll be some awkward moments on the team meeting on Monday.

Ty Gibbs is the grandson of NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs. He’s in his debut full-time season with the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

“I definitely deserve one back,” Ty Gibbs told Fox Sports from the front stretch after the win.

“But, we’re racing for wins and they’re hard to come by. So, I had to take it.”

“We were fighting tight all day. Just couldn’t hold the bottom. John Hunter was a little faster and we had a great race.”

“Just got in there deep and had to bump him out of the way, up the track. We’re short track racing.”

“I deserve one back. But, I gotta do whatever I can to win. We raced really good there. I feel like we put on a good show. That’s really important,” Gibbs added.

That’s the 3rd win for Ty Gibbs in 2022.

“Yeah. Him and I will settle it Monday,” John Hunter Nemechek stated after climbing from the car.

“I don’t want to say too much and get myself in trouble. But, just got drove through. I mean, he didn’t even try and make the corner there”

“Racers never forget. That’s for sure,” Nemechek concluded.
