Last week, Corey Day clipped William Sawalich in the left rear exiting turn four. Day missed the bottom and ran wide, clipping the No. 18.
Sawalich wiggled to the inside. The outside lane opened, for only a second. Day stuck his nose on the outside but the hole closed fast. Sawalich was turned into the outside wall down the backstretch.
“I have no doubt that he’s going to try and wreck me or make my life difficult for the rest of these races,” Corey Day stated after Darlington.
The two drivers had a lengthy conversation on the pit lane after Darlingtin. Day clarified, “He told me to go [expletive] myself. So, that’s where we’re at.”

A week later, they crash at Gateway…
With 47 laps to go, Day ran deep into turn one on the inside of Sawalich. He missed the bottom and skates up the track into the door of Sawalich.
They exited turn two side-by-side. More contact was made exiting the corner.
Sawalich then hooked a hard left down the front stretch. Day was sent nose first into the inside wall. Sawalich also picked heavy damage.
“Tell that [expletive] idiot that I wasn’t the one into him. The No. 7 was the one pushing me into him,” Day stated over the radio.
There was contact with the No. 7 but not at the time of the initial contact into turn one. As they exited turn two, Allgaier was leaning on the bumper of the No. 17 and pushing him into Sawalich. However, Allgaier had a car on his bumper as well.
“You know that guy’s already mad at you. You can’t rough him up again the following week or there’s going to be consequences,” Jamie McMurray stated of Day from the broadcast booth.
“I understand he’s mad. But, he’s essentially ruined his own race by retaliating on the No. 17,” Jamie McMurray added of Sawalich.
“The No. 18 just retaliates from last week. That’s just dumb racing,” Justin Allgaier stated over the radio.

What will NASCAR do?
“I think he made himself look stupid enough for me not to need to say anything,” Day added after the incident.
“I’m just worried about next week at Bristol and what I have to do for my team,” Sawalich was tight lipped after the incident at Gateway.
And, rightly so.
In recent years, NASCAR has issued steep penalties for drivers that intentionally crash another competitor. This is a fairly blatant example of intentional crashing.
