In heat 4, Tyler Carpenter and Hudson O’Neal set the front row. They rolled into turn one, nearly even.

Carpenter turned to the bottom as they entered turn one, O’Neal ran inches off the outside wall. He then rolled wide off turn two. However, O’Neal was clearly there. O’Neal was passed the numbers on Carpenter’s right side and nearly to the front wheel’s of his machine.

Yet, Carpenter shoved him wide. O’Neal was left no options beyind driving nose first into the outside pit exit wall.

As O’Neal bounced off the outside wall, three more cars were collected. O’Neal’s front end was heavily damaged in the crash. A bulk of heat race four was taken out but there’s more…

As the cuation was thrown, O’Neal drove away from the scene. He stepped on the gas to catch up to Carpenter. O’Neal then drove into and over the left rear while remaining in the throttle. He spun the leader around under the caution in retaliation.

The crowd erupted.

O’Neal pulled to the pit area, done for the race. Carpenter picked up a flat left rear tire from the retaliation, he was also forced to exit the race per the flat tire rules.

The wall itself was also pushed back slightly. That brought officials to a lengthy cleanup of the incident scene.

O’Neal was removed from the Friday portion of the show. He would be allowed to return on Saturday. However, the chassis is bent and needs to be sent back to Rocket.

“The New Deal” has been written on the rear spoiler of Hudson O’Neal for several years. The phrase plays on the catch phrase of his father, “The Real Deal Don O’Neal.”

Carpenter started the B-Main toward the back. He spun in the race but still drove from the back and into a transfer spot.

Carpenter started Friday’s main event from the last row. He drove it into the top 5. He and Tyler Erb rubbed fenders while battling for 4th. Under caution, Carpenter drove into the rear of his machine.

Only the top three from Friday’s feature advanced into Saturday’s main event. Carpenter will start his finale in a consi.

Carpenter is the defending winner of the Gateway Dirt Nationals. He won in 2021 as well as 2019 (the 2020 event was canceled).
