INDYCAR driver Scott Dixon said that he takes naps during NASCAR races
The average NASCAR Cup Series race duration spans beyond 3 hours. And, the length of races has been a talking point all week.
Last week, the NTT INDYCAR Series race was postponed from Sunday night to Monday afternoon. Due to the new conditions, the series elected to trim the a number of laps off the length of the race.
The length of a race became a quick talking point.
Scott Dixon told Frontstretch, “I don’t know. I find it really hard to watch Cup races these days … It allows for a nap so maybe that’s good.”
NASCAR driver Kyle Larson has responded to that comment…
Kyle Larson says NASCAR races are too long
“Well, I’ll start off by saying yes, I agree that a lot of our Cup races are too long,” Larson stated to the IndyStar.
“I just think that’s the way the world has kind of gone and how people consume sports. I definitely think our races are too long. I think three hours is too long.
Larson concluded, “So yeah. But as far as a nap, I don’t know.”
NASCAR comments on the length of their races
“If you think about the lengths of the races. In my opinion, they’re pretty historical. So it was more about endurance and finishing the race than who the best driver, competitor was, every single weekend,” NASCAR’s Ben Kennedy stated via the Rubbin is Racing podcast.
“Because you’d have cars that finish laps down, you have cars that’d break midway through the race and there’s something incredible about a driver and a vehicle going 500-miles and being the best at it.”
“And in today’s world, every vehicle is going to finish a race or they should finish the race. So, it’s evolved from that and the audience has changed.”
NASCAR is considering shortening the length of some races.
“There are opportunities where people might not have traveled as far a distance. Especially when you think about some of these exhibition races, the Clash.”
“Let’s condense it, shorten it a little bit. Let’s try different formats, and then see how the feedback is. I think that’s what we’re really thinking about: how do we test some of these when there are lower stakes on the line.”
“Then measure it, see what fans are saying, teams, drivers, then we can start to make those changes in the future.”
