Darlington Race Results: September 4, 2022 (NASCAR Cup Series)

The NASCAR Playoffs opened at Darlington Raceway

Tonight, the NASCAR Cup Series drivers are on the grid in Darlington, South Carolina. The 1.366-mile of Darlington Raceway is set to open the NASCAR Playoffs with the famed Southern 500.

Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 115 (1-115 / 367)

Green flag, Logano and Bell run side by side into turn one. Two laps later, they remain side by side at the front. Bell lifts and Logano takes the lead via the outside lane.

Lap 6, the caution is out for rain.

Green, Bell runs Logano inches off the outside wall into turn one. Bell lifts and Logano leads into turn two.

Lap 36, the competition caution is out.

Green, Bell shoves Logano clear of Byron into turn one. Byron wins the battle with Bell for 2nd.

Lap 66, Byron is on the bumper of Logano in the battle for the lead. Byron works to his inside in turn one, Logano lifts and Byron takes the lead.

Lap 76, green flag pit stops are underway. A very slow stop for Logano as they struggle with the left front.

Lap 79, Kyle Larson hits the pit lane under green with another possible engine issue. Larson re-enters the track 3 laps down. However, he’s still trying to figure out the issue.

8 to go in stage one, teammates Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney bang doors as they fight for 9th. Blaney wins the battle.

2 to go in stage one, Chase Elliott gets loose, bounces off the wall and spins on his own. Chase Briscoe is collected. Elliott has heavy suspension damage and he’s done for the day.

William Byron wins stage 1 under cuation!

Logano leads the field to the pit lane as Kyle Busch wins the race to the pit exit.

Green flag on stage two, Kyle Busch clears Denny Hamlin via the outside lane.

William Byron is complaining of a possible engine issue. He says the engine sounds different but he still has pace.

Lap 152, Hamlin is on the bumper of Kyle Busch in the battle for the lead. Green flag pit stops are underway.

Lap 162, Chastain pits for a second time with an issue. He thought it was a tire failure but all the tires were up. The team is unsure of the issue.

Lap 169, Chastain pits for a third time. The crew is looking for a suspension failure.

Lap 171, Ricky Stenhouse Jr slams the wall as he attempts to let Wallace by and finds himself in the marbles. Stenhouse Jr pulls it right to the garage, no caution.

Lap 180

Lap 180, Todd Gilliland bounces off the wall and spins. The caution is out.

Green, Kyle Busch clears Hamlin to hold the lead.

Lap 191, Kyle Larson spins on his own and the caution is back out.

Everybody but Corey LaJoie heads for the pit lane.

Green, LaJoie and Busch runs side by side into turn one and off turn two. Busch finally clears him into turn three.

Lap 209, Martin Truex Jr has caught the bumper of Kyle Busch in the battle for the lead. Busch lifts and gives Truex Jr the lead.

Lap 218, Cody Ware spins and the caution is out.

Green, Kyle Busch clears Truex Jr off turn two to hold the lead.

5 to go, Bell shoves Suarez in the wall! They both continue as Logano rubs doors with Bell and Logano muscles 4th away.

Kyle Larson is now back on the lead lap. He was four laps down in stage one.

Green flag on stage three, Busch clears Logano into turn one.

Lap 273, many cars are hitting the pit lane.

Lap 275, Kevin Harvick is on fire! He comes to a stop and the caution is out!

Kyle Busch pits from the lead and he brings the rest of the leaders with him. However, many cars stay out as they pitted just a few laps ago.

Green, Kyle Busch clears Hamlin into turn one and Martin Truex Jr takes over 2nd.

74 to go, Truex Jr works inside of Kyle Busch in the battle for the lead. Busch lifts and gives him the spot.

50 to go

50 to go, green flag stops are underway.

42 to go, Hamlin is the last car of the leaders to pit. He has 5 laps fresher tires than Truex Jr but he trails Truex by 15 seconds.

34 to go, race leader Truex Jr says he’s lost power steering!

32 to go, Kyle Busch drives right by Truex Jr to take the race lead. Truex Jr heads to the pit lane under green.

29 to go, Hamlin is up to 4th. He’s the fastest car on the track.

28 to go, Cody Ware spins and the caution is out.

Kyle Busch has blown an engine under caution! He returns to the pit lane and hands the lead to Erik Jones!

Green, Erik Jones clears Tyler Reddick into turn one. Reddick and Hamlin rubs doors for 2nd, Hamlin wins that battle.

10 to go, Jones leads Hamlin by 0.4 seconds.
