NASCAR race at Homestead Miami Speedway risks cancellation

Wildfires continue to grow in the areas around Homestead-Miami Speedway

This weekend, NASCAR is scheduled to return to the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The track is located south of Miami in Homestead, Florida.

A wildfire called the “344 Brush Fire” has broken out near the speedway. It’s southeast of Miami and West of Homestead.

There are currently several wildfires burning South Florida. As of today, the fire in the area of the speedway is only 20% contained.

Severe drought and high wind gusts are currently amplifying the situation. No rain is expected until next week.

Due to infrastructure damage, power outages in the Homestead area are expected.

Recently, the fire caused officials to shut down both entry and exit to the Florida Keys. In videos, smoke and flames were seen billowing across the narrow highway, blocking all access.

How close are the fires to the track? Pretty close.

Close enough that aircraft water drops are gathering water from a lake on the property of the speedway itself. As of now, the fire is just miles away.

Video shot from the track itself captured high levels of smoke behind the backstretch of the speedway.

As of now, the race is still scheduled to continue. The race weekend begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.

NASCAR says they are monitoring the situation.

City of Homestead Statement

On Thursday morning, the city of Homestead posted the following update:
